8 notes on this verseVerse 22. "And He instructed me and spoke to me, saying..." The vision was so obscure that the prophet needed the angel's teaching. "'...Now, 0 Daniel, I have come forth that I may instruct thee and that thou mayest understand.'" That is, I have been sent to thee and have come forth, not from the presence of God in the sense of departing from Him, but only in the sense of coming unto thee.

While Daniel is yet speaking, confessing his own sin and his people's, the man Gabriel returns, the same messenger of chapter eight, touching him about the time of the evening sacrifice, an offering that had not been made in the ruined temple for decades yet still marks the hour. Gabriel tells him the commandment came forth at the very beginning of his supplications, before the prayer was finished, the answer already sent the moment the praying began. Daniel is called a man greatly beloved, a title given him three times across the book, here and twice more at 10:11 and 10:19, each occasion opening a fresh unveiling of what is to come.

And when he was proclaiming every supplication in humility and fastings and sackcloth, the angel Gabriel was sent forth to him, in order to cause him to understand what was sought by him. For Daniel speaks in this way, "And while I was still speaking and praying and declaring my sins and the sins of my people, prostrating my pitiful case before the Lord my God concerning the holy Mountain, and while I was still speaking in prayer, behold, the man Gabriel, whom I saw in the vision in the beginning, came flying and he touched me around the evening sacrifice and he caused me to understand and spoke with me and said, 'Daniel, now I have come to teach you understanding. And he informed me - Hebrew, Gave me intelligence or understanding. That is, about the design of his visit, and about what would be hereafter. And talked with me - Spake unto me. O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill - Margin, “make thee skillful of.” The Hebrew is, literally, “to make thee skillful, or wise, in understanding.” The design was to give him information as to what was to occur.
