David sent word to Tamar at the palace

on 2 Samuel 13:7-11

David sends his own daughter into Amnon's house, never asking why a grown man needs his sister alone to bake for him. The king who wept over Bathsheba's dying child now sends Tamar in unknowing. The sword promised at 12:10 finds its first opening inside his own house.

Amnon's refusal of the food shows that his hunger was a pretense. Matthew Henry observes that the sick are humoured and feel entitled to give orders, so no one questions the command to clear the room. Tamar, suspecting nothing, stays behind.
