Matthew 12:1-2

The disciples plucking corn through the fields on the sabbath broke no law of Moses, since Deuteronomy 23:25 allowed a hungry traveller to pluck ears by hand; the Pharisees' charge is against their own oral tradition, which classed plucking as reaping and rubbing as threshing. The bench reads the accusation as the fence around the law swallowing the law it was meant to protect. Jesus answers not by denying the tradition's authority outright but by setting two greater precedents beside it.

Matthew 12:3-4

what David did: What David did sends the Pharisees to their own history, 1 Samuel 21:1-6, where David and his men ate the shewbread reserved for the priests alone. The bench notes the argument's force: if human need excused a breach of ceremonial law for Israel's anointed king, how much more for the Son of David's own men, on a point of tradition rather than of written commandment. Jesus meets legalists on their own ground, Scripture against tradition, rather than dismissing the sabbath itself.

Matthew 12:5-6

The priests profane the sabbath and are blameless, doubling the sacrifices on that day per Numbers 28:9-10, because temple service outranks the day's rest. Then comes the claim the Pharisees could not answer without conceding the case: one greater than the temple is here. The bench reads this as the first stroke of the greater-than chain that runs through the chapter to greater than Jonas and greater than Solomon at verses 41 and 42, Jesus placing himself above the very house that housed God's presence.

Matthew 12:7-8

not sacrifice: I will have mercy, and not sacrifice repeats Hosea 6:6, already quoted at 9:13, and the bench reads the repetition as deliberate: the Pharisees have twice now condemned the guiltless for want of the very mercy the prophet named. The claim that follows settles the whole controversy at its root, for the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day; the day belongs to him who instituted it, and he defines its rightful use rather than being bound by another's fence around it.

Matthew 12:9-10

He went into their synagogue, and the withered hand meets him there along with the same accusers, their question is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days asked not to learn but that they might accuse him. The bench notes the man's hand is withered, atrophied by disuse or old injury rather than freshly broken, so no emergency forces the timing; the Pharisees have staged the test themselves, and Jesus takes it up in the open.

Matthew 12:11-13

The sheep fallen into a pit is an argument from their own practice, for the rabbis themselves permitted rescuing an animal's body on the sabbath though a stricter later ruling forbade it; Jesus argues from the lesser mercy they already grant to the greater mercy a man deserves. Stretch forth thine hand asks the man to do the very thing his withered limb could not do, and the healing comes in the act of obedience itself, the hand restored whole even as it moves.

Matthew 12:14

The Pharisees held a council against him immediately after a healing they could not deny, and the bench marks the plain contradiction: a man's hand is made whole and the response is a plot to destroy the healer. Mark 3:6 names the Herodians joining them here, an alliance of religious and political enemies who agreed on nothing else; the sabbath question has become a capital matter within a single chapter.

Matthew 12:15-16

Jesus withdrew himself from thence rather than force the conflict to its hour before the appointed time, and he healed the multitudes that followed while charging them not to make him known. The bench reads the charge for silence as consistent with the whole Gospel's pattern, the messianic secret that keeps popular acclaim from forcing a premature crisis, and Matthew is about to explain the withdrawal itself as prophecy fulfilled rather than mere caution.

Matthew 12:17-18

Spoken by Esaias the prophet introduces the longest Old Testament quotation in Matthew, Isaiah 42:1-4, and the bench reads its placement as pointed: directly after Jesus withdraws from a murder plot rather than fighting it, the prophet's servant is named, my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased, the same words the Father spoke at the baptism. The servant's mission to shew judgment to the Gentiles anticipates the chapter's own turn toward Nineveh and the queen of the south.

Matthew 12:19-21

He shall not strive, nor cry describes exactly the manner just shown, withdrawal rather than public contention, and the bruised reed and smoking flax picture a ministry that does not finish off the weak or nearly spent. The bench reads these as the gentlest verses applied to the sternest week yet in the chapter, the same hand that will pronounce the unpardonable sin two verses later shown here as tender toward the bruised; the Gentiles trusting in his name closes the citation on the note the whole book will end on at 28:19.

Matthew 12:22-23

One possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb receives sight and speech together, and the crowd's question, is not this the son of David, is the plainest messianic confession the common people make in the Gospel so far, echoing the thread first raised at 9:27. The bench notes the double affliction made the case undeniable to any onlooker; there was no room left for the accusation of mere natural skill, which forces the Pharisees to the darker explanation that follows.

Matthew 12:24

This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils is the Pharisees' answer to a miracle they cannot deny and will not honour, naming the Philistine deity of Ekron, literally lord of the flies, mockingly applied to Satan. The bench reads the charge as the very edge of the unpardonable line Jesus is about to name, attributing the plain work of the Spirit to the ruler of demons while standing in front of the evidence itself.

Matthew 12:25-26

Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation answers the charge on its own terms before any defence of himself: if Satan cast out Satan, his kingdom cannot stand, since no ruler funds the destruction of his own house. The bench notes Jesus knew their thoughts before they spoke them aloud, and the logic he offers is not a plea but an exposure, the accusation self-defeating on its own premise.

Matthew 12:27-28

By whom do your children cast them out turns the accusation back on its makers, since Jewish exorcists operated in this period and the Pharisees never called their own practitioners servants of Beelzebub; therefore they shall be your judges. If I cast out devils by the Spirit of God then the kingdom of God is come unto you follows as the chapter's own positive claim, the exorcisms themselves standing as evidence that the kingdom has arrived rather than a sign yet future.

Matthew 12:29

Entering the strong man's house to spoil his goods pictures Satan as a householder disarmed, and the binding must come first, before the goods, the possessed men and women, can be taken back. The bench reads this as Jesus naming his own exorcisms plainly: he has already bound the strong man in the wilderness temptation of chapter 4, and every deliverance since is the plunder of a house whose master no longer holds it unopposed.

Matthew 12:30

He that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad closes the argument with no room left for neutrality; the man who will not confess the Spirit's work for what it is has, by that refusal, taken the scattering side. The bench reads this verse as the hinge into the warning that follows, since the crowd has just watched the Spirit's work named as Satan's, and the next words tell them precisely what ground they are standing on.

Matthew 12:31-32

The blasphemy against the Holy Ghost that shall not be forgiven has drawn several readings, named honestly rather than settled by the exposition. Some hold it names the specific act just committed, seeing the Spirit's undeniable work firsthand and calling it Satan's, a sin bound to that unrepeatable moment of eyewitness rejection; others read it as a settled, final state of hardened unbelief maintained against the Spirit's testimony until death, so that the sin is unpardonable because repentance never comes rather than because forgiveness is withheld from a seeking heart; a speaking word against the Son of man, by contrast, may reflect ignorance of who stands before them and is forgiven. The bench across these readings agrees on the pastoral word that follows from all three: a soul troubled over having committed it has, by that very fear, given the evidence that it has not.

Matthew 12:33

Make the tree good, and his fruit good returns to the fig-tree logic of 7:17-20, now aimed directly at the men who just called good fruit evil. The bench reads the verse as the needed bridge from the unpardonable sin back to ordinary accountability, since the tree is known by his fruit and the Pharisees' own words in this chapter are about to be weighed on that same scale.

Matthew 12:34-35

O generation of vipers repeats John the Baptist's own charge at 3:7, now spoken by the greater one John announced, and how can ye, being evil, speak good things presses the same tree-and-fruit logic onto speech itself. Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh names the heart, not merely the tongue, as the source under judgment; a good man's treasure and an evil man's treasure each surface in what they say, whether they intend it or not.

Matthew 12:36-37

Every idle word that men shall speak extends the coming account to speech that seems weightless, the careless remark rather than the deliberate lie, and the bench reads idle as unprofitable or unemployed rather than merely trivial, words that do no work and bear no fruit. By thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned sets speech as evidence at the judgment, the fruit by which the tree already named in verse 33 is finally read.

Matthew 12:38-39

Master, we would see a sign from thee comes from scribes and Pharisees who have just watched a blind and dumb demoniac healed before their own eyes, and the bench reads the request as proof of the hardened unbelief just described, demanding a further sign after refusing the one already given. An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign names the request itself as the symptom, spiritual adultery being the prophets' own word for covenant unfaithfulness, and the only sign granted will be the sign of the prophet Jonas.

Matthew 12:40

As Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly names the sign directly, the Son of man's own burial and resurrection. The reckoning of three days and three nights from a Friday crucifixion to a Sunday rising has drawn two readings: the majority reading counts by the Jewish practice where any part of a day stands for the whole, so that a portion of Friday, all of Saturday, and a portion of Sunday together answer the formula; a minority reading places the crucifixion on a Wednesday to reach a literal seventy-two hours. The bench names both without forcing the text past what it plainly claims, that the sign given is death and resurrection, not a chronology puzzle to be solved before the sign can be believed.

Matthew 12:41-42

men of Nineveh: The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation names Gentile pagans who repented at a foreign prophet's single sermon, and the queen of the south who travelled far to hear Solomon's wisdom stands as the second Gentile witness against a generation that has both greater than Jonas and greater than Solomon standing in front of them and will not repent. The bench reads this as the chapter's own completion of the greater-than chain begun at verse 6, greater than the temple, greater than Jonas, greater than Solomon, three claims naming one person.

Matthew 12:43-45

The unclean spirit that walketh through dry places, finds no rest, and returns to find the house empty, swept, and garnished, gives the picture of a life reformed but not filled, cleaned of one occupant and left vacant for seven others worse than himself. The bench applies this directly to the generation just addressed, Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation, a nation that had reformed under John's preaching and swept its house of idolatry yet stood empty of the greater presence now offered it, primed for a worse ruin than before.

Matthew 12:46-47

His mother and his brethren stood without, desiring to speak with him while he yet talked to the multitude inside, and the bench notes the ordinary family concern behind the visit, Mark 3:21 recording that his own kin had gone out to restrain him, fearing for his safety amid the mounting hostility just narrated. The interruption sets up the sharpest family saying in the Gospel so far.

Matthew 12:48-50

Who is my mother: Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? is not a denial of Mary and his brothers by blood but a redrawing of the family's true boundary, stretching his hand toward the disciples with behold my mother and my brethren. Whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother makes obedience, not descent, the entry into Christ's own household, a claim that answers the son-of-David question raised earlier in the chapter by widening sonship itself into a family of the will.
