Jeremiah 2:1-3

Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying,: The lawsuit opens with a memory rather than a charge, I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, a courtship image the bench reads as the exodus generation's early devotion before the calf and the complaints. Israel was holiness unto the Lord, and the firstfruits of his increase sets the nation apart as consecrated produce, so that whoever devours it offends and evil comes upon them. The whole indictment that follows in the chapter is measured against this first love, a marriage remembered before it names the marriage broken.

Jeremiah 2:4-8

Hear ye the word of the Lord, O house of Jacob: The charge is framed as a question with no good answer, what iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, since nothing in God's dealing explains the desertion. Israel forgot to ask where is the Lord even in the middle of his own deliverance, brought up out of Egypt and led through the wilderness, and having entered the plentiful land, defiled it. Every office fails together, the priests said not, Where is the Lord, the pastors transgressed, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, so the corruption runs from the top of the nation rather than from the people alone, as Gill and Henry both note.

Jeremiah 2:9-11

Wherefore I will yet plead with you, saith the Lord: The Lord turns prosecutor across generations, I will plead with you, and with your children's children will I plead, and calls the nations themselves as witnesses, pass over the isles of Chittim, send unto Kedar, and see if such a thing has happened. The evidence is that pagan nations keep their gods, though those gods are no gods at all, while Israel alone has changed its glory for that which does not profit. The bench notes the argument's edge, the nations are more constant to falsehood than Israel has been to the truth.

Jeremiah 2:12-13

Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this: The heavens are summoned to be horribly afraid at what follows, two evils rather than one, my people have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water. Living water flows and cannot be exhausted, while a hewn cistern is stagnant at best and here cracked past even holding what falls into it, an image the bench reads as willful loss chosen over a gift already possessed. Calvin presses the folly of the exchange, labor spent digging a cistern that will not even keep the rain, when the fountain stood open the whole time.

Jeremiah 2:14-19

Is Israel a servant? is he a homeborn slave?: The question, is Israel a servant, is he a homeborn slave, why is he spoiled, treats the nation's ruin as an anomaly needing explanation, since a free heir should not be plundered like property. The young lions that roared upon him and burned his cities without inhabitant are read by the bench as Egypt and Assyria in figure, the very powers Israel courted for protection. The chapter's sharpest question follows, what hast thou to do in the way of Egypt, to drink the waters of Sihor, since going to Egypt or Assyria for help was itself a rejection of the God who had already delivered them from both.

Jeremiah 2:20-25

For of old time I have broken thy yoke: The broken yoke and burst bands were meant as liberty, and Israel answered, I will not transgress, before turning to worship on every high hill and under every green tree, the standing formula for Canaanite fertility worship the book repeats through its opening chapters. The noble vine planted wholly a right seed becomes a degenerate plant of a strange vine, and no washing removes the stain, thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord God, however much nitre and soap is used. The imagery turns to animals in heat, a wild ass that snuffeth up the wind at her pleasure, whom none need pursue since she seeks the encounter herself, the bench reading the figure as addiction rather than plain sin, a craving that outruns its own shame.

Jeremiah 2:26-28

As the thief is ashamed when he is found: The nation's shame is compared to a thief caught in the act, spreading from the house of Israel to its kings, princes, priests and prophets alike, every rank sharing one embarrassment. Idolatry is described in its plainest terms, saying to a stock, thou art my father, and to a stone, thou hast brought me forth, wood and rock addressed as parents while the true Father is ignored until trouble comes. The Lord's answer is to let the false gods be tested, where are thy gods that thou hast made thee, let them arise if they can save thee, a challenge as many times over as Judah's own cities, since each town had made its own.

Jeremiah 2:29-32

Wherefore will ye plead with me?: The Lord turns the plea back on the people, ye all have transgressed against me, and notes that correction itself has failed, in vain have I smitten your children, they received no correction, since even the sword that devoured their prophets taught them nothing. The question, have I been a wilderness unto Israel, a land of darkness, answers the complaint before it is voiced, since the desolation belongs to the people's choices rather than to God's provision. Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire, sets an absurdity beside the real fact it exposes, my people have forgotten me days without number, a devotion no woman would show her own jewelry withheld even from her own God.

Jeremiah 2:33-37

Why trimmest thou thy way to seek love?: The charge sharpens into instruction gone wrong, thou hast also taught the wicked ones thy ways, guilt spreading outward from the nation's own practiced skill at seeking illicit love. The blood of the souls of the poor innocents found in Judah's skirts is read by the bench as child sacrifice alongside spiritual harlotry, sin needing no secret search because it stands in plain sight upon all these. The chapter closes on false confidence, because I am innocent, surely his anger shall turn from me, met by the plain sentence that Judah will be ashamed of Egypt as she was already ashamed of Assyria, since the Lord has rejected the very confidences she trusted.
