Isaiah 65:1-2

I am sought of them that asked not for me: The chapter opens as the Lord's own answer to the plea that closed chapter sixty-four, and Paul quotes both verses of the Gentiles at Romans 10:20 and 10:21, verified: I am found of them that sought me not applied to a nation that was not called by my name, and the hands spread out all the day applied to Israel's own long refusal. The Lord names himself sought by strangers before he answers the covenant people's own complaint, an order Paul reads as the calling of the Gentiles standing beside Israel's continuing summons rather than replacing it. The patience is total: spread out my hands all the day describes not a moment's appeal but a standing posture toward a people who walked after their own thoughts.

Isaiah 65:3-5

provoketh me to anger continually: The specific sins named are the fertility cult conducted in gardens and upon altars of brick, outside the Lord's own altar law, paired with the necromantic practice of lodging among graves and monuments to consult the dead, which Gill and Clarke both trace to pagan rites current in Isaiah's Judah. Swine's flesh and broth of abominable things break the food law in the same breath as the grove worship breaks the first commandment, one apostasy working through cult and table together. Stand by thyself, come not near to me, for I am holier than thou turns even the language of holiness into a boast, and the older commentators read it as spiritual pride, called smoke in my nose rather than genuine separation unto the Lord.

Isaiah 65:6-7

I will not keep silence: The judgment is written down in advance and stored, behold, it is written before me, so that when it falls it answers a settled account rather than a sudden reaction, a point Henry presses against any reading of divine anger as impulsive. The iniquities of the fathers are joined to the iniquities of the sons and repaid together, into their bosom, the same phrase used twice for emphasis, because the burning of incense upon the mountains had continued from one generation into the next without repentance breaking the line. The measure recompensed is their former work, the Lord answering the nation's own history rather than inventing a new charge against it.

Isaiah 65:8-10

as the new wine is found in the cluster: The cluster of grapes carrying a blessing pictures the remnant hidden inside the nation under judgment, one saith, destroy it not, for a blessing is in it, and the Lord applies the figure directly, so will I do for my servants' sakes, that I may not destroy them all, the servants named here for the first time in the chapter as the group the rest of the oracle keeps distinguishing. A seed out of Jacob and an inheritor out of Judah are promised the land itself, Sharon on the coastal plain and the valley of Achor south of Jericho named as literal pasture restored to literal flocks. Achor means trouble, the valley of Achan's judgment in Joshua seven, and Barnes and Delitzsch both note the reversal, the ground named for a curse becoming a place herds lie down in peace.

Isaiah 65:11-12

prepare a table for that troop: That troop and that number are commonly read by the older lexicographers as the pagan deities Gad, fortune, and Meni, destiny, named directly at the Hebrew text's own wording, so that the table prepared and the drink offering furnished describe a rival cult of fate-gods set up beside the Lord's own worship. Gill and Delitzsch both carry this identification while noting that some later readings take the words as common nouns rather than proper names, a philological question the passage's sense does not depend on either way. The charge answers the chapter's opening reversal: those who forget my holy mountain and did not answer when the Lord called receive the sword their own silence had chosen.

Isaiah 65:13-16

my servants shall eat, but ye shall be hungry: Four times over the Lord sets my servants against ye in a single breath, eat against hungry, drink against thirsty, rejoice against ashamed, sing for joy against cry for sorrow, the sharpest statement in the book of a division running inside the one covenant people rather than between Israel and the nations. The forsakers leave their own name for a curse, while the Lord promises to call his servants by another name, a new name the older commentators connect forward to the new name of chapter sixty-two. The blessing formula itself changes, to bless or swear by the God of truth translating a Hebrew word built on the root of Amen, so that the very oath a servant swears carries God's own faithfulness inside it, Henry and Barnes both noting the wordplay.

Isaiah 65:17-19

I create new heavens and a new earth: I create new heavens and a new earth is quoted at 2 Peter 3:13 and stands behind Revelation 21:1's own new heaven and new earth, verified, the chapter's language becoming the New Testament's own vocabulary for the world's final renewal. The former shall not be remembered names an actual erasure of the old order's grief, and the Lord's own joy is stated alongside the people's, I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in my people, a mutual gladness the older writers read as the goal the whole book has moved toward. The voice of weeping shall be no more heard in her answers the book's opening chapters, where weeping fills Zion's daughters, with the promise that the same city will one day hold none of it.

Isaiah 65:20-23

the child shall die an hundred years old: The child shall die an hundred years old describes death itself as a rarity rather than an infant's common fate, length of days pictured as the ordinary case and a shortened life as the sinner's exception. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown read the picture as necessarily describing an order still touched by death and sin, since a sinner can still die at a hundred years, an intermediate age between this present one and the eternal state where Revelation twenty-one pictures no more death at all: the millennial reading, the site's own, and the one the verses' plain arithmetic supports. Calvin reads the same verses as figurative for the security of the whole gospel age, and the note names that reading while stating its cost, that it must dissolve the passage's own numbers into figure and leaves the hundred-year sinner with nothing to count. The promise stands either way at its plainest: they shall build houses and inhabit them, they shall not labour in vain, and mine elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands, a reversal of the curse named in Deuteronomy twenty-eight where another eats what a man plants.

Isaiah 65:24

before they call, I will answer: Before they call, I will answer describes a prayer answered ahead of the asking, the closest the Old Testament comes to picturing a request met before it is voiced, and the older writers connect it to the intimacy promised the servants throughout the chapter rather than to a general doctrine of prayer. While they are yet speaking, I will hear doubles the promise from the other direction, the hearing arriving inside the speech itself rather than after it. Barnes reads the verse as the chapter's own answer to its opening charge, that Israel had called and the Lord had not answered, now reversed for the servants who do call.

Isaiah 65:25

The wolf and the lamb shall feed together: The wolf and the lamb shall feed together completes an oracle begun in nearly identical words at 11:6-9, the sevenfold Spirit's kingdom pictured there now folded into new creation's own peace. Dust shall be the serpent's meat recalls the curse laid on the serpent in Genesis 3:14 and names its persistence even inside a renewed world, the one creature left still eating the ground. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain closes both this chapter and the servant and forsaker division that opened it, Delitzsch and Alexander both reading the verse as the book's own return to chapter eleven's picture, completed rather than replaced.
