Isaiah 30:1-3

Woe to the rebellious children: The woe falls on children who take counsel and cover themselves with a covering not the Lord's own, adding sin to sin by the very act meant to secure them. Their plan is an alliance walked to Egypt without asking the Lord's mouth, strengthening themselves in the strength of Pharaoh and trusting in Egypt's shadow. Henry reads the charge as covering two sins at once, a treaty made and a God not consulted, and the strength they leaned on becomes their shame and confusion instead.

Isaiah 30:4-5

his princes were at Zoan: Judah's ambassadors have already reached Egypt, princes at Zoan and envoys as far as Hanes, the embassy pressed forward in spite of the warning already given. The whole delegation returns ashamed of a people that could not profit them, neither help nor profit, but a shame and a reproach. Barnes reads the geography as evidence the alliance was already in motion when Isaiah spoke, the prophecy overtaking an embassy already on the road.

Isaiah 30:6-7

The burden of the beasts of the south: The caravan's route is drawn as a burden in its own right, laden asses and camels carrying tribute through a land of lion, viper and fiery flying serpent to buy help from a nation that will not profit them. Clarke reads the danger of the route itself as part of the folly, treasure risked through a wilderness for an alliance already judged worthless. Egypt's help is called vain and to no purpose, and the Lord names her Rahab, sit still, a power all name and no strength for the fight Judah needed.

Isaiah 30:8-9

write it before them in a table: The word is now ordered set down permanently, written in a table and noted in a book so that it stands for the time to come for ever and ever, a witness the nation cannot later deny hearing. The reason given is blunt, this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of the Lord. Gill reads the permanence of the record as aimed at a later generation, so that when the judgment arrives no one can say the warning was never given.

Isaiah 30:10-11

speak unto us smooth things: The people's own request to the seers is quoted directly, see not, prophesy not right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits, a nation asking its prophets to lie comfortably rather than warn truly. Get you out of the way, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us, presses the demand to its end, not merely softer words but the removal of God's own title from their hearing. Henry reads the request as the clearest possible picture of a people choosing blindness over correction.

Isaiah 30:12-14

trust in oppression and perverseness: The Holy One of Israel answers the demand for smooth things by naming what was actually trusted, oppression and perverseness, and the judgment matches the image: this iniquity becomes a breach ready to fall, swelling in a high wall until it breaks suddenly at an instant. The wall's collapse is then figured as a potter's vessel shattered so completely that not a sherd remains fit to take fire from the hearth or water from the pit. Delitzsch reads the double figure, sudden collapse and total breakage, as answering the false security of verse 10 point for point.

Isaiah 30:15-17

In returning and rest shall ye be saved: Against the Egypt alliance the Holy One of Israel sets the one path he actually offers, in returning and rest shall ye be saved, in quietness and confidence shall be your strength, and the chapter's saddest clause follows it directly, and ye would not. The people chose flight on horses and swift riders instead, and the Lord answers their own words, therefore shall ye flee, until they are left as a beacon on a mountaintop, alone and visible to all. Henry reads the refusal as the whole chapter's turning point, salvation offered in stillness and declined for speed.

Isaiah 30:18-19

will the Lord wait, that he may be gracious: Even after the refusal of verse 15 the Lord's posture is patience, therefore will the Lord wait, that he may be gracious unto you, mercy held open rather than withdrawn by the people's own choice. Barnes reads the waiting alongside the exalting, the Lord's holiness and his mercy named in the same breath, a God of judgment who is still blessed by all that wait for him. The promise turns concrete at once, the people shall dwell in Zion, weep no more, and be answered the moment their cry is heard.

Isaiah 30:20-21

thy teachers be removed into a corner: The bread of adversity and water of affliction are named honestly as real hardship, and against that hardship the promise is not comfort but instruction, thy teachers shall not be removed into a corner any more, but thine eyes shall see thy teachers. A voice behind the traveller then speaks the single clearest guidance in the chapter, this is the way, walk ye in it, given at the exact moment of turning right or left. Wesley reads the teachers restored and the voice given together, correction no longer withheld once the people are willing to hear it.

Isaiah 30:22

cast them away as a menstruous cloth: The turn toward the Lord's voice produces a concrete act, the graven images of silver and molten images of gold defiled and thrown away as an unclean cloth, get thee hence spoken to what had been trusted. Gill reads the violence of the figure as deliberate, the idols not quietly abandoned but treated with the same revulsion the law attached to ceremonial uncleanness. What had been an alliance's idols become refuse the moment the nation returns to the Holy One of Israel.

Isaiah 30:23-26

give the rain of thy seed: The blessing that follows repentance is drawn in the language of ordinary farm life, rain for the sown seed, bread fat and plenteous, cattle fed in large pastures, and oxen and asses eating clean provender winnowed with the shovel and the fan. Rivers open on every high mountain and hill in the day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall, and the light of the moon becomes as the sun while the sun's own light is multiplied sevenfold. Delitzsch reads the sevenfold light as figurative rather than literal astronomy, the language of a healed and bound-up people rather than a change in the created lights themselves.

Isaiah 30:27-28

the name of the Lord cometh from far: The name of the Lord itself is pictured arriving from far off, burning with anger, lips full of indignation and a tongue as devouring fire, the judgment now given a face rather than only an event. His breath is an overflowing stream reaching to the neck, sifting the nations with a sieve of vanity and setting a bridle in the jaws of the peoples that causes them to err, imagery of a rider controlling a beast he intends to lead astray. Barnes reads the bridle as directed at Assyria specifically, the same power that had bridled other nations now finding itself led where it did not intend to go.

Isaiah 30:29-30

as in the night when a holy solemnity is kept: For Judah the same event that terrifies Assyria produces a festival song, gladness of heart as when the pilgrim comes with a pipe into the mountain of the Lord, to the mighty One of Israel. The Lord causes his glorious voice to be heard and shows the lighting down of his arm, the same anger of verse 27 now witnessed by his own people as deliverance rather than threat. Henry reads the contrast as the chapter's whole argument in miniature, one arm of the Lord meeting two peoples with opposite outcomes.

Isaiah 30:31-33

the Assyrian be beaten down: The Assyrian falls through the voice of the Lord rather than a mortal sword, beaten down with a rod, and wherever the grounded staff the Lord lays upon him passes it comes with tabrets and harps, battle turned into a scene the psalmist could have set to music. The chapter's last word names the destination prepared for the king himself, Tophet, ordained of old, made deep and large, its pile fire and much wood, kindled by the breath of the Lord like a stream of brimstone. Clarke and Barnes both read Tophet's ancient preparation as answering the alliance that opened the chapter, the very power Judah ran to Egypt to escape already under a judgment fixed long before.
