Hebrews 10:1-2

The law carries only a shadow of good things to come, skia, not the very image, eikon, of the things themselves, and so its sacrifices, offered year by year continually, could never make the worshippers who drew near perfect, the teleioo thread stated in the negative before the chapter states it kept. Verse 2 presses the point with a question: if one offering had actually worked, would not the sacrifices have ceased, the worshippers once purged having no more conscience of sins. The repetition itself is the proof the remedy never reached its target; a sacrifice that must be offered again has not yet finished its work.

Hebrews 10:3-4

Instead of removing sin the yearly sacrifices made a remembrance of it again, anamnesis, the Day of Atonement functioning each year as a fresh reminder of guilt rather than its end. Verse 4 states the reason as flatly as the letter ever states anything: it is not possible, adunaton, that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins, aphairein, lift them off and carry them away. The impossibility is structural, an animal's blood cannot answer for a moral agent's guilt, and it sets up the greater sacrifice the rest of the chapter names.

Hebrews 10:5-7

Psalm 40:6-8 is placed in the Son's own mouth at his coming into the world, and the letter follows the Greek Septuagint's wording, a body hast thou prepared me, against the Hebrew Masoretic Text's mine ears hast thou opened, a genuine textual difference the exposition keeps rather than smooths away. Both readings carry the same sense, an ear opened to obey and a body prepared to obey are one act described two ways, and the letter's own argument needs the body specifically, since it is about to speak of an actual offering, once for all, of the body of Jesus Christ. Verse 7 completes the quotation, Lo, I come, in the volume of the book it is written of me, to do thy will, O God, obedience named as the true offering the Levitical system only pictured.

Hebrews 10:8-9

The writer draws out his own citation's logic: above, quoting sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, referring to everything offered by the law, and then, quoting Lo, I come to do thy will, he taketh away the first that he may establish the second. The two halves of the one Psalm are read as two moments, the old system set aside and the new obedience established, not by an external decree alone but by the very words the Son speaks at his coming. The verse gives the theological ground for the earlier ready to vanish away, the first covenant's sacrificial system taken away precisely because the second, obedience embodied, has now been established.

Hebrews 10:10

The chapter's central sentence names the once thread's other summit alongside verse 14: by that will, the Son's obedience just quoted, we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ, ephapax, once for all, a single word in the Greek carrying the entire argument against repetition. Sanctified here is a perfect passive, a completed state with continuing effect rather than a process still underway, the same finished ground the security doctrine builds on. One offering, one body, one time, stands against the whole apparatus of yearly and daily sacrifice the previous chapter finished describing.

Hebrews 10:11-12

The posture itself preaches: every priest stands, daily, offering oftentimes the same sacrifices that can never take away sins, a picture of endless unfinished labor. Against it verse 12 sets one contrasting posture, this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God, the sitting itself the proof of completed work, since no priest under the law ever sat in the sanctuary, there being no seat provided for a service that was never done. Psalm 110 stands behind the phrase, the same enthronement the letter opened with in chapter 1.

Hebrews 10:13-14

The seated priest still waits, expecting till his enemies be made his footstool, Psalm 110 completed, the interval between his sitting down and his enemies' final subjection the same interval the church now lives inside. Verse 14 gives the reason the waiting changes nothing about the finished work already done: by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified, the once and perfect threads meeting at their highest point in the whole letter. The perfect tense names a completed act with a standing result, the sanctified already perfected rather than being perfected by degrees through further sacrifice.

Hebrews 10:15-18

The Holy Ghost is named directly as the witness behind the citation that follows, Jeremiah 31 quoted a second time in the letter, now condensed to its two essential promises: I will put my laws into their hearts and write them in their minds, and their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. Verse 18 draws the conclusion the whole chapter has built toward, where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin, closing the argument opened at verse 1's shadow that could never make the comers perfect. What the law's repeated sacrifices could never do, the new covenant's forgiveness has already done, remembered no more rather than remembered again each year.

Hebrews 10:19-21

The therefore turns the whole doctrinal argument into an invitation: brethren, boldness, parrhesia, to enter into the holiest itself, not merely approach it, by the blood of Jesus, a right the high priest alone held once a year now extended to every believer. Verse 20 names the way as new and living, freshly consecrated, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh, the torn veil read as the torn flesh of the cross opening what was shut. Verse 21 adds the reason confidence is possible at all, an high priest over the house of God, the same priesthood the two chapters before have just finished arguing.

Hebrews 10:22-25

Three let-us exhortations gather the doctrine into duty, the letter's own pattern: let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and bodies washed with pure water, language drawn from the priests' own consecration at Exodus 29 and Leviticus 8. Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering follows at verse 23, grounded not in the readers' own strength but in for he is faithful that promised. Let us consider one another closes the triad at verses 24 and 25, provoking unto love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together as the manner of some already was, and so much the more as ye see the day approaching, the early church's own sense that the end stood near.

Hebrews 10:26-27

The fourth warning opens on wilful sin after receiving the full knowledge of the truth, for which there remains no more sacrifice, the same logic argued earlier in the letter, the readers standing at the one sacrifice already given with no other coming. What is left instead is a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation which shall devour the adversaries, language drawn from Isaiah 26:11's fire against God's enemies. The readings divide along familiar lines: some read a true believer's apostasy answered with severe chastening rather than a loss no return can reach, while others read a description of professors who were never inwardly regenerate, receiving knowledge without ever possessing the reality it named.

Hebrews 10:28-29

The argument runs the same lesser-to-greater form as the previous chapter: under Moses' law, despising it meant death without mercy on two or three witnesses, Deuteronomy 17:6 the reference. How much sorer punishment then for one who has trodden underfoot the Son of God, counted the blood of the covenant an unholy thing, and done despite unto the Spirit of grace, three verbs naming contempt for each person of the Godhead in turn. Wherewith he was sanctified divides the commentators over its antecedent, whether the blood set apart the professing person under the covenant, Owen's reading, or whether it names Christ himself, consecrated as both priest and offering by his own blood, each reading arguing from the same clause honestly. The Spirit of grace is the same title the letter gives him elsewhere, a person still active rather than a memory, and the outrage the verse names is committed against him directly.

Hebrews 10:30-31

Two citations from Deuteronomy 32:35-36, the Song of Moses, ground the warning in God's own character rather than the writer's rhetoric: vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, and the Lord shall judge his people, a phrase that cuts both ways, comfort for the faithful and warning for the unfaithful within the same covenant people. The chapter's own summary follows in one short sentence: it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God, the same living God the letter names repeatedly against every dead idol and dead work. The verse closes the warning proper before the writer turns, exactly as after every earlier warning, back to confidence in his readers.

Hebrews 10:32-34

As before, the warning turns immediately to evidence of grace already shown: call to remembrance the former days, right after their illumination, when they endured a great fight of afflictions, some as public gazingstocks under reproach, others standing by their companions who suffered. Verse 34 names two specific griefs the readers already bore, compassion shown to the writer in his bonds and the joyful loss of their own goods, taken because they knew, present tense knowledge rather than a wish, that they possessed in heaven a better and an enduring substance. The better thread returns at its most personal, the readers' own history read back to them as proof that the warning is not a verdict already passed against them.

Hebrews 10:35-39

The exhortation gathers the whole chapter into one command, cast not away your confidence, parrhesia, the same boldness of verse 19, which carries great recompense of reward, and one condition, patience, until having done God's will they receive the promise. Habakkuk 2:3-4 is quoted directly, yet a little while and he that shall come will come and will not tarry, and the just shall live by faith, but if any man draw back my soul shall have no pleasure in him, the prophet's own word to a nation waiting on a slower-than-expected judgment turned to the readers' own waiting. The chapter's last word is confidence rather than threat: we are not of them who draw back unto perdition, but of them that believe to the saving of the soul, the same turn to assurance every warning in the letter makes before it ends.
