The Lord speaks to his Father in the Gospel as follows: "They are not of the world, as I am not of the world." … No one can understand the truth and force of this except one who has gone through the trials of what [Jesus] was talking about—one who has been under the teacher of experience.
They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. These words are repeated from Joh 17:14, where they are given as a reason of the world's hatred to them; and here, as showing that they are exposed to the evil of it; and in both are used as an argument with his Father, that he would take notice of them, and preserve them.
Rare words are the text's own signal of a deliberate thread: the fewer the occurrences, the more the places it appears belong together.
