Commentary

4 notes on this verse
Ye shall not fear them,.... On account of the numbers, strength, courage, and gigantic stature of the inhabitants, at least some of them; nor on account of their walled towns, and fortified cities: for the Lord your God he shall fight for you; as he did, particularly at Jericho, the walls of which city fell at the sound of rams' horns; and at Gibeon, when he cast down hailstones on their enemies, and more were slain by them than with the sword; and in all their battles it was he that gave them success and victory.

This site's exposition

And at that time I commanded Joshua

on Deuteronomy 3:21-22

Joshua is charged on the evidence of his own eyes, "all that the LORD your God has done to these two kings". Sihon and Og are the sample of what awaits the kingdoms ahead.

This site's exposition

the LORD your God Himself will fight for you

The charge ends with its reason, the one Moses gave the people at 1:30. John Gill names the fears it answers, the numbers, strength and stature of the enemy and fortified cities. He points ahead to the fall of Jericho's walls and the hailstones at Gibeon as the promise kept.

We reproach our leader if we follow him trembling. The prayer which Moses made for himself, and the answer which God gave to that prayer. His prayer was that, if it were God's will, he might go before Israel over Jordan into Canaan.
