He supposed that strangers would come from afar to worship the God of Israel and to pay homage to him; and this also might reasonably be expected, considering what worthless things the gods of the nations were, and what proofs the God of Israel had given of his being Lord of the whole earth. Here are petitions very pertinent.

The fifth petition turns to “the foreigner who is not of Your people Israel,” drawn from a distant land by the report of God's name. It repeats 1 Kings 8:41-43 with its stated purpose, that “all the peoples of the earth will know Your name and fear You”.
