A king who has just heard one poor man's no “lay down on his bed, turned his face away, and refused to eat”. The throne that could withstand Ben-hadad's army is undone by a vegetable garden. His account to Jezebel in verse six repeats the offer nearly word for word.

Soon his wife Jezebel came in
Jezebel was the daughter of Ethbaal, king of the Sidonians, by 1 Kings 16:31. Her question comes before any word from Ahab, and it opens the scheme of verses 7 to 10. The queen takes charge.
