Luke 13:1-3

Some present told him of the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices, a report of the governor's cruelty answered at worship, and the crowd's unspoken assumption is that such a death marks out the greater sinner. Jesus refuses the assumption outright: I tell you, Nay, but except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. The bench reads the warning as aimed past the dead Galileans at the living listeners, turning a news report into a call to their own hearts.

Luke 13:4-5

Jesus adds a second case unasked, the eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell, an accident rather than an atrocity, and puts the same question and the same answer to it: think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem, I tell you, Nay. Together the two cases cover both categories under which people still explain disaster, a tyrant's violence and a structure's collapse, and Jesus declines both as measures of guilt. The bench notes the repeated except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish is not a threat of a matching death but a warning of a matching unreadiness, since Jerusalem's own coming fall stood behind the words.

Luke 13:6-7

The parable that follows answers the same question with a picture: a certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none, the fruitlessness stated twice before the dresser speaks a word. Three years is the count given to the owner's patience, and cut it down, why cumbereth it the ground is his verdict when patience runs its course. The bench reads Israel's fig tree behind the image without narrowing the picture to one nation only, since the warning of verses 1 to 5 has already widened it to every hearer.

Luke 13:8-9

The dresser of the vineyard intercedes, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it, offering labor rather than argument on the tree's behalf. If it bear fruit, well, and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down leaves the sentence standing but delayed, mercy given a further season rather than removed. The bench hears in the unnamed dresser a figure of patient intercession, and reads the parable's open ending, whether the fruit came, as deliberately left for the hearer to answer with his own life.

Luke 13:10-13

teaching in one of the synagogues: He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath when he sees a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, bowed together and unable in any wise to lift up herself, a condition Luke the physician describes with clinical precision while also naming a spirit behind it. He calls her to him unasked, pronounces her loosed from her infirmity, and lays his hands on her; immediately she was made straight, and glorified God. The bench notes the eighteen years matches the eighteen slain at Siloam two paragraphs earlier, an unforced echo binding the chapter's two halves, judgment answered and mercy given the same span of years.

Luke 13:14

The ruler of the synagogue answers with indignation, not to Jesus directly but to the people, there are six days in which men ought to work, come and be healed on those, and not on the sabbath day. The bench notes the ruler's rule is not itself unscriptural, since the Law commands six days of labor, but its application here misses that the woman asked for nothing and Jesus acted on his own initiative to release a bound daughter of Abraham. The indignation is aimed sideways at the crowd rather than at the Healer, which Jesus will not allow to stand unanswered.

Luke 13:15-16

The Lord answers the ruler with an argument from the synagogue's own practice: doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall and lead him to watering, an act of everyday necessity nobody there would call unlawful. Ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound lo these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day sets a bound daughter of the covenant against an untied animal and asks which claim is greater. The bench reads the argument as from the lesser to the greater, common in the rabbis' own method, turned here against those who used it to excuse rather than to heal.

Luke 13:17

When he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed, the argument leaving them no honest reply, while all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him. The bench notes the double result, shame for the critics and joy for the crowd, which Luke's Gospel repeats at other confrontations and which belongs to the wider joy thread running through the whole book. A synagogue that began the sabbath in silent surveillance ends it in open praise.

Luke 13:18-19

Unto what is the kingdom of God like, and whereunto shall I resemble it, Jesus asks after the sabbath healing, and answers with a grain of mustard seed cast into a garden, which grew and waxed a great tree, so that the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it. The bench reads the parable against its occasion, a small, contested act of mercy in one synagogue standing for the kingdom's own beginning, unimpressive in its first size and certain in its eventual reach. The birds lodging in the branches carries, for readers who know Daniel and Ezekiel's tree images, an echo of nations sheltered under a kingdom's shade.

Luke 13:20-21

Whereunto shall I liken the kingdom of God, Jesus asks again, and gives a second, matching picture: it is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened. Where the mustard seed pictures visible growth, the leaven pictures hidden, pervasive working, the kingdom advancing inside a mass it is never seen to touch directly. The bench notes the two parables are paired on purpose, one from a man's field and one from a woman's kitchen, covering the kingdom's coming in both scale and manner.

Luke 13:22-23

He went through the cities and villages, teaching, and making his way toward Jerusalem, Luke restating the travel notice that governs these chapters while a questioner interrupts with, Lord, are there few that be saved. The bench notes the question was a live one among Jewish teachers of the day, some reckoning salvation broad and some narrow, and Jesus answers it as he answers most speculative questions, by redirecting it to the hearer's own urgency rather than settling the head count. What follows is addressed to the questioner and the crowd together, not merely to satisfy curiosity.

Luke 13:24

Strive to enter in at the strait gate, Jesus answers, for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able, turning a question about numbers into a command about effort. The bench notes strive translates a word used of an athlete's contest, and strait describes narrowness rather than difficulty of a moral kind, a gate that will not admit what a person tries to carry through it. Seeking without striving is named here as a real possibility that still fails to enter, which is the verse's own warning.

Luke 13:25-27

When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, those left standing without knock and plead, Lord, Lord, open unto us, and hear, I know you not whence ye are. Their defense is proximity rather than relationship, we have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets, and it is refused: depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity. The bench reads the scene as answering the strait-gate question directly, since nearness to Jesus in this life, hearing him teach and even sharing his table, is shown not to be the same thing as being known by him.

Luke 13:28-29

weeping and gnashing of teeth: There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth when the shut-out see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and themselves thrust out, the grief sharpened by recognizing exactly who is inside. They shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God, a promise the bench reads as Gentile inclusion alongside the patriarchs, drawing on Isaiah's own picture of the nations streaming to Zion. The verse names no nation's final exclusion, only a reversal of who is found ready.

Luke 13:30

There are last which shall be first, and there are first which shall be last, a saying repeated elsewhere in the Gospels and placed here to close the strait-gate teaching with a single memorable reversal. The bench reads it as summarizing the whole passage, national or religious privilege claimed by birth or proximity gives no automatic place, while the excluded of this world may enter freely. The saying is stated as a general rule rather than an assignment of any one group to either position.

Luke 13:31-32

Certain Pharisees come with a warning, Get thee out, and depart hence, for Herod will kill thee, and the bench weighs their motive honestly, some reading it as genuine concern from friendlier Pharisees and others as a ruse to hurry Jesus out of Herod's territory and further from the crowds. Jesus answers with open contempt for the threat, Go ye, and tell that fox, naming Herod's cunning cruelty without fear, and states his own timetable regardless: I cast out devils, and do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected. The bench notes perfected here means his work reaching its appointed completion, not any lesser sense of the word.

Luke 13:33

Nevertheless I must walk to day, and to morrow, and the day following, Jesus continues, for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem, a grim proverb turning the city's own history of killing its prophets into the very reason he must go there rather than away from it. The bench reads the statement as Jesus setting his own course by necessity and calling rather than by Herod's threat or any other man's schedule. Jerusalem, not Galilee, is named as the city where a prophet's death belongs, and the next two verses will say why.

Luke 13:34-35

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem: O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not: the lament names the city's history and Jesus' own repeated, refused desire in the same breath, tenderness and grief rather than anger. Your house is left unto you desolate speaks judgment on the temple and city of that generation, and the standing rule against reading any final rejection of Israel into such words applies here as everywhere the site treats this theme; the sentence that follows keeps a door open rather than closing one. Ye shall not see me, until the time come when ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord names a future recognition, and the positions on when and how that word will be fulfilled are held by different interpreters without this note settling which.
