John 15:1

I am the true vine: I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman: the seventh and last of the predicated I AM sayings follows straight on the supper and the walk to Gethsemane, and the bench reads a vineyard passing underfoot or moonlit on the temple gate as the likely occasion for the image. True, alethine, sets Jesus against Israel's own vine imagery, Psalm 80:8 and Isaiah 5's vineyard that brought forth wild grapes, the true vine succeeding where the old vine failed. The husbandman, georgos, is the vinedresser who owns the ground and tends the plant, the Father named as the one whose hand is on every branch that follows.

John 15:2

Every branch in me: Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away, and every branch that beareth fruit he purgeth, that it may bring forth more fruit: the verse names two operations of the same careful hand, removal for the barren branch and pruning, kathairei, for the fruitful one. The bench divides gently on what taketh away, airei, pictures: some read it of a false profession finally cut off, others of a true branch lifted and cleaned rather than severed, the same verb used of lifting a fallen vine off the ground in ancient viticulture; both readings are held without a verdict forced on the text. Either way the purpose clause governs the verse: even discipline serves more fruit, not less.

John 15:3

Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you: the pruning verb of verse 2, kathairei, and the cleanness here, katharoi, share a root, and the eleven have already been called clean once this same night, all but the traitor already gone out, at 13:10. The cleansing agent named is not ritual but the word Jesus has spoken, and the bench reads the claim as continuous with the whole Gospel's account of the word that gives life. It is present possession, not a future hope: the disciples are already what the pruning aims to keep them.

John 15:4-5

Abide in me, and I in you: meno, the Gospel's own word for fellowship since the Spirit abode on Jesus at the Jordan, becomes the discourse's refrain, used eleven times in this chapter alone. The branch cannot bear fruit of itself except it abide in the vine, and Jesus states the negative at its most absolute, without me ye can do nothing, ou dynasthe poiein ouden, not a lesser fruitfulness but none at all apart from him. The site's own continuationist, deeper-life tradition, Tozer chief among the roster's voices on this thread, reads the verse as the abiding life rather than a single decision, a continuous drawing on a continuous supply, and the historic bench reads the same organic dependence: the branch has no life of its own, only the vine's life running through it.

John 15:6

If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered, and gathered and burned: the verse has carried heavy weight in the perseverance debate, and the bench states the two readings without forcing one, some holding a merely professing branch here exposed and removed, others reading a true believer's fruitless state disciplined by loss rather than final destruction, the image drawn from the ordinary vinedresser's bonfire of prunings rather than a courtroom of final judgment. Both readings agree on the practical force: fruitlessness in the branch that will not abide is real and it is met with real loss, whatever the branch's ultimate standing.

John 15:7-8

If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you: the sweeping promise is bounded by its own condition, a will shaped by his abiding words rather than an unconditioned wish-granting, the bench noting this as the same qualification the prayer promises of chapter 14 and 16 will each carry. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit, so shall ye be my disciples: fruitfulness is named as the Father's own glory and as the mark by which discipleship is proven, not merely professed.

John 15:9-10

As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you, continue ye in my love: the vine's abiding now names its content directly, love traced from the Father through the Son to the disciples in one unbroken line, and continue translates the same meno as abide. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love, even as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love: Jesus offers his own obedience as the pattern, the bench reading the verse as love proven in keeping rather than love earned by it, since the Son's sonship was never in question and his obedience flowed from a love already his.

John 15:11

These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full: on the eve of the cross Jesus names his own joy as a possession he means to leave behind, remain again meno, and full, pepleromene, a joy brought to its completion rather than a beginning of one. The bench reads the verse against the hour about to fall on him, the joy set before him that Hebrews 12:2 will later name, offered here to the eleven as their own inheritance from the vine.

John 15:12-13

love one another, as I have loved you: This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you: the new commandment of 13:34 is restated at the discourse's center, the measure again his own love rather than a natural affection. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends: the bench reads the saying as both general truth and specific self-description, Jesus about to do exactly this within hours, the commandment and its enactment separated by a single night.

John 15:14-15

Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you: friendship is not offered instead of obedience but through it, the bench noting the same pattern as verse 10, love proven in keeping. Henceforth I call you not servants, for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth, but I have called you friends, for all things I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you: the change in status is measured by disclosure, a servant kept in the dark about his master's purposes against friends let into the Father's own counsel, the whole discourse itself the proof of the new standing.

John 15:16-17

Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: election runs the other direction from the world's ordinary friendships, the initiative and the appointment both his, and remain is meno again, fruit meant to outlast the branch that bore it. The prayer promise returns, whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you, tied directly to the fruit-bearing purpose rather than standing alone, and the chapter's command is repeated once more, that ye love one another, framing the whole unit.

John 15:18-19

If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you: the discourse turns from the vine's inward life to the branches' outward reception, and kosmos here carries the sense the patterns brief names, humanity in its rebellion against God rather than creation as such. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own, but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you: the bench reads the hatred as a kind of negative proof, the same election of verse 16 that gave the disciples their fruitfulness also removing them from the world's own, making its hostility a mark of belonging rather than a scandal.

John 15:20-21

Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord: the saying from the footwashing of 13:16 is recalled and given its darker application, persecution following the pattern obedience already showed would follow. All these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not him that sent me: the bench notes the hostility is traced to its true root, not the disciples' own failings but ignorance of the Father, the same ignorance the prologue named in its own people that received him not.

John 15:22-25

If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin, but now they have no cloke for their sin: the coming and speaking created accountability where ignorance might otherwise have excused, the bench reading cloke, prophasis, as a pretext or covering now stripped away. He that hateth me hateth my Father also repeats the identification of Father and Son that runs the whole Gospel, and the works none other man did are added to the words as a second, harder-to-dismiss ground of guilt. The verse closes by citing Scripture directly, they hated me without a cause, drawn from Psalm 35:19 and 69:4, and John's own formula that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law names the hatred itself as something the prophets foresaw rather than an accident of history.

John 15:26-27

When the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: the second Paraclete saying names the Spirit's coming as sent equally by the Son and proceeding from the Father, language the later church's filioque debate would draw directly from, and the bench notes the verse without adjudicating that later controversy, since John's own concern here is the Spirit's testimony to Christ, not the doctrine of procession as such. And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning: the eleven's own testimony joins the Spirit's, human witness and divine witness together answering the trial structure the whole Gospel has been building since chapter 1's deposition of John the Baptist.
