Isaiah 41:1-2

Keep silence before me, O islands: The trial of the gods opens with a courtroom summons, keep silence before me, O islands, the nations called to renew their strength and come near together to judgment rather than simply listen. The first exhibit is a question, who raised up the righteous man from the east, called him to his foot, and made him rule over kings, driving them like dust before his sword and stubble before his bow. Gill and Calvin read the man as Abraham, called from the east to conquer the kings of Genesis 14, while Barnes and Delitzsch weigh the same language as Cyrus, whose name the book gives openly at 44:28, and the two identifications are named here rather than argued to a verdict.

Isaiah 41:3-4

He pursued them, and passed safely: The pursuit continues without loss, he pursued them and passed safely, by a road his feet had not gone before, a note of ease appended to the conquest. The question that follows turns from the conqueror to his sender, who hath wrought and done it, calling the generations from the beginning, and the answer comes in the divine self-naming, I the Lord, the first, and with the last; I am he. Delitzsch reads the title as the same claim later expanded at 44:6 and 48:12, the Lord's priority over every empire the trial will call to the stand.

Isaiah 41:5-7

The isles saw it, and feared: The nations react to the evidence with fear rather than faith, the isles saw it and feared, the ends of the earth drawing near in alarm rather than trust. Their answer to the crisis is not to seek the Lord but to reinforce their idols, encouraging one another, be of good courage, while the carpenter, the goldsmith and the man with the hammer pass an image between them until it is fastened down with nails so that it will not fall. Henry notes the irony sharpened here, a god that must be nailed in place is the nations' answer to a Lord who needs no support at all.

Isaiah 41:8-10

thou, Israel, art my servant: Against the frightened nations stands Israel, addressed as my servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the seed of Abraham my friend, a title of relationship rather than merit, taken from the ends of the earth and never cast away. The reassurance rises to the chapter's best known line, fear thou not, for I am with thee, be not dismayed, for I am thy God, promising strength, help, and the upholding of God's own right hand of righteousness. Barnes notes that every verb in the promise is first person and active, the Lord doing the strengthening, the helping and the upholding rather than merely commanding Israel to be brave.

Isaiah 41:11-13

shall be ashamed and confounded: The promise turns outward to Israel's adversaries, all who were incensed against her shall be ashamed and confounded, reduced to nothing, and those who strive with her shall perish. Verse 12 presses the point further, Israel will seek her enemies and not find them, since those who war against her will be as a thing of nought, complete disappearance rather than mere defeat. The section closes where it began, for I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not, I will help thee, the same hand from verse 10 now explicitly named as holding Israel's own.

Isaiah 41:14-16

Fear not, thou worm Jacob: The address turns startling, fear not, thou worm Jacob, a title of weakness taken up rather than avoided, paired at once with the strong titles redeemer and the Holy One of Israel, the phrase this book uses twenty five of its thirty one occurrences in Scripture. The promise reverses the image entirely, a new sharp threshing instrument having teeth, Israel made able to thresh mountains and beat them small, the weakest creature turned into a tool of judgment. Gill reads the threshing figure as agricultural rather than merely military, the slow grinding work of separating grain from chaff applied here to nations rather than sheaves.

Isaiah 41:17-18

the poor and needy seek water: The evidence turns from conquest to compassion, the poor and needy seeking water that is not there, their tongues failing for thirst, met by a direct promise, I the Lord will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them. The answer given is not a single well but rivers opened in high places and fountains in the valleys, the wilderness itself made a pool of water. Henry reads the image as both literal provision for the returning exiles crossing dry country and a picture of the gospel's supply for spiritual thirst, both readings carried by the older commentators without choosing between them.

Isaiah 41:19-20

I will plant in the wilderness the cedar: The watered wilderness of the previous verse is planted with a deliberate list of trees, the cedar, the shittah tree, the myrtle, the oil tree, the fir, the pine and the box tree together, seven kinds named where the desert had offered none. The purpose is stated plainly rather than left to inference, that they may see, and know, and consider, and understand together, that the hand of the Lord hath done this. Delitzsch notes the pairing of the Lord's hand and the Holy One of Israel in one verse, the same divine title from verse 14 now attached to the evidence of creation rather than redemption.

Isaiah 41:21-23

Produce your cause, saith the Lord: The trial reaches its center with a direct challenge to the idols, produce your cause, bring forth your strong reasons, the courtroom language of the whole chapter now aimed at the gods themselves rather than at their worshippers. The test set is prophecy, shew the former things or declare us things for to come, that we may know the latter end of them, a demand for demonstrated knowledge of time the idols cannot meet. The conclusion is stated as the standard for deity itself, do good or do evil, that we may be dismayed and behold it together, shew the things that are to come hereafter, that we may know that ye are gods, and Barnes reads the unit as the book's clearest statement that prediction is the evidence the trial turns on.

Isaiah 41:24-25

ye are of nothing, and your work of nought: The verdict on the idols is given before the next exhibit is called, ye are of nothing, and your work of nought, an abomination is he that chooseth you, judgment pronounced in the middle of the trial's own evidence. The new exhibit follows at once, I have raised up one from the north, and he shall come, from the rising of the sun shall he call upon my name, treading princes as mortar and clay under a potter's foot. The traditional dating reads the figure as Cyrus again, named openly three chapters later, the very prophecy the late dating position exists to explain away, and both positions are named honestly rather than argued here.

Isaiah 41:26-27

Who hath declared from the beginning: The trial closes its case against the idols with a fourfold denial, none that declares from the beginning, none that shows it beforetime, none that shows, none that declares, none that even hears the question put to them. Against that silence the Lord answers his own challenge, the first shall say to Zion, Behold, behold them, and I will give to Jerusalem one that bringeth good tidings, the good news of chapter 40 now credited to the same voice that opened this trial. Henry connects the good tidings named here to the herald of 40:9, the trial and the comfort running as one argument rather than two separate oracles.

Isaiah 41:28-29

there was no man: The Lord's own search comes up empty, I beheld, and there was no man, no counsellor among them able to answer a single word when asked, the trial ending in silence rather than a defense. The chapter's final verdict falls without qualification, behold, they are all vanity, their works are nothing, their molten images are wind and confusion, the same emptiness named at the trial's opening now stated as its conclusion. Gill reads the repeated language of wind and confusion as a deliberate echo of the idol shop scene in verses 6 and 7, the whole trial framed by workshop imagery from first exhibit to last.
