Ezekiel 32:1-2

the twelfth year: Two more months pass from chapter 31's oracle, and this final word against Pharaoh opens as a dirge rather than a plain sentence, take up a lamentation for Pharaoh king of Egypt. The king is called a young lion of the nations and in the same breath a whale in the seas, dual imagery Gill reads as Pharaoh's two claims at once, ferocity on land and mastery of the Nile, the very waters he fouled with his own feet. Keil notes that the lamentation form itself is an irony, a funeral song sung for a king who is not yet dead.

Ezekiel 32:3-6

The image shifts from cedar to river beast, the Lord will spread out my net over thee, hunting Pharaoh the way Egypt's own fishermen hunted the Nile's great creatures. Once landed he is left in the open field for the fowls of heaven and the beasts of the earth, and his flesh is laid upon the mountains until the valleys are filled with his height, an image Fairbairn reads as the corpse itself covering the ground like a fallen mountain range. Clarke adds that watering the land with thy blood plays on Egypt's own dependence on the Nile's flood, the source of its life turned into the sign of its judgment.

Ezekiel 32:7-8

cover the heaven: The fall of one king darkens the sky itself, the stars made dark, the sun covered, the moon withholding her light. Henry and JFB both read the language as the standard prophetic idiom for the collapse of a great power, a world thrown into disorder rather than a claim of a literal eclipse over Egypt. Keil adds that the darkening answers Egypt's own boast in its light-giving gods, the sun disks stamped on every temple, now extinguished at the Lord's word.

Ezekiel 32:9-10

Egypt's fall unsettles nations far beyond its own borders, vexing the hearts of many people in countries Pharaoh has not even known. Verse 10 sharpens the picture to kings themselves, horribly afraid, trembling at every moment when the sword is brandished before them. Gill reads the reach of the terror as the point, a warning meant for every throne that watches Egypt fall, not for Egypt alone.

Ezekiel 32:11-14

the sword of the king of Babylon: The instrument is finally named without figure, the sword of the king of Babylon, after two chapters of allegory the historical agent is stated plainly. Nebuchadnezzar's army will fell Egypt's multitude and its beasts alike, so man's foot and the hoofs of beasts no longer trouble the waters, and verse 14 closes the thought with waters made deep and rivers running like oil, a stillness Keil reads as the peace of an emptied land rather than a blessing. Fairbairn notes that Egypt did in fact suffer a real, datable Babylonian campaign under Nebuchadnezzar, so the oracle is not left as pure metaphor.

Ezekiel 32:15-16

The recognition formula closes the first oracle, then shall they know that I am the Lord, the purpose the book states for judgment throughout. Verse 16 hands the lament itself to the daughters of the nations, women singing the dirge over Egypt's multitude, which Henry reads as the whole earth called to witness a fall it was meant to learn from. The first half of the chapter ends here, and the second half, opening two weeks later in the text's own dating, takes up the same king from inside the grave.

Ezekiel 32:17-18

the fifteenth day: A second oracle opens two weeks after the first, in the fifteenth day of the month, and moves the whole scene underground, wail for the multitude of Egypt, cast down to the nether parts of the earth with them that go down into the pit. The chapter now becomes a roll call of fallen empires already resident in Sheol, each one named by nation and given its own place in the grave. Keil reads the device as a second funeral for the same king, spoken this time from inside the place he is being sent to.

Ezekiel 32:19-21

pass in beauty: The question, whom dost thou pass in beauty, echoes chapter 31's whom art thou like, and answers it the same way, by sending Egypt down to lie with the uncircumcised among the slain. Verse 21 has the strong among the mighty already in Sheol speak to him out of the midst of hell, a scene JFB compares to Isaiah 14's taunt over the king of Babylon, the dead greeting a new arrival to their company. Gill notes uncircumcised is used here as a term of shame among nations that themselves practiced circumcision, not a claim about Egypt's own custom, since Egypt is recorded elsewhere as a circumcising people.

Ezekiel 32:22-23

Asshur, Assyria, is the first nation named in the grave, her graves set round about her in the sides of the pit, the very power chapter 31 had already sent down. Henry reads the placement as deliberate, since Assyria caused terror in the land of the living and now bears the same fate it dealt its neighbors in the earlier oracle. The pattern set here, a nation's terror in life answered by its shame in death, repeats through every name that follows.

Ezekiel 32:24-25

Elam follows Assyria into the same grave, a power east of Babylon whose multitude is named and whose terror in life is answered by shame in death, the formula repeated almost word for word. Keil reads the repetition itself as part of the oracle's force, each nation given the identical sentence so no power reads itself as an exception. Verse 25 restates the bed set for her among the slain, Sheol pictured as a resting place shared among nations that in life never shared a table.

Ezekiel 32:26-27

Meshech and Tubal, the same pairing that returns as Gog's allies in chapters 38 and 39, take their place in the grave beside Assyria and Elam. Verse 27 draws one distinction the other nations did not receive, they shall not lie with the mighty that are fallen of the uncircumcised, buried instead with their weapons under their heads, their iniquities upon their bones. Fairbairn reads the separate note as marking these as ancient warriors from an earlier age given a warrior's burial even in shame, set apart from the more recent dead the chapter has already named.

Ezekiel 32:28-30

Egypt itself is addressed directly here, thou shalt be broken, set in the midst of the very company the chapter has been assembling. Edom follows at verse 29, her kings and princes laid among the slain despite their might, and verse 30 adds the princes of the north and all the Zidonians, every power the ancient world respected brought down to the same pit. Wesley reads the list as building deliberately toward its climax, Egypt named again and again until the final verses seat Pharaoh among the very nations he is watching fall.

Ezekiel 32:31-32

Pharaoh finally sees the grave he has been shown throughout the chapter, and the comfort offered him is the grimmest kind, comforted over all his multitude only because he is no longer the worst case among them. Verse 32 closes with the same terror clause repeated through the whole roll call, I have caused my terror in the land of the living, now spoken of Pharaoh as it was spoken of every nation before him. Clarke reads the whole two-chapter oracle as ending exactly where it must, Egypt's pride answered not by Israel's boast but by a shared grave with every other empire that trusted its own strength.
