And set darkness upon thy land - As I did when a former king refused to let my people go to the wilderness to worship me. I will involve thee, and thy house, and thy people, and the whole land, in desolation and wo.

on Ezekiel 32:7-8

The fall of one king darkens the sky itself, the sun covered. Henry and JFB both read the language as the standard prophetic idiom for the collapse of a great power. Keil adds that the darkening answers Egypt's own boast in its light-giving gods, now extinguished at the Lord's word.

The darkness over the land recalls the ninth plague of Exodus 10:21-23. Then the darkness covered Egypt while Israel had light in its homes. The God of the Exodus acts again against Pharaoh.

Here the plague of darkness, which was upon Egypt of old for three days, seems to be alluded to, as, before, the turning of the waters into blood. For, when former judgments are forgotten, it is just that they should be repeated.
