Among the slain they prepare a resting place for Elam with all her hordes, with her graves all around her. All of them are uncircumcised, slain by the sword, although their terror was once spread in the land of the living. They bear their disgrace with those who descend to the Pit. They are placed among the slain.

They have set her bed in the midst of the slain, with all her multitude,.... The grave is called a bed, Isa 57:2, whereon is put the sepulchral chest or coffin, in which the body is laid, and rests as on a bed.

Elam follows Assyria into the same grave, a power east of Babylon whose terror in life is answered by shame in death. Keil reads the repetition itself as part of the oracle's force, each nation given the identical sentence so no power reads itself as an exception.

Elam lay east of Babylon, with Susa as its capital. Assyria under Ashurbanipal sacked Susa around 647 BC, and Jeremiah 49:34-39 announced Elam's judgment early in Zedekiah's reign. Elam now lies beside the empire that crushed it.
