Daniel 2:1-3

Nebuchadnezzar's dream comes in the second year of a reign already begun by the deportation of chapter one, and his spirit was troubled, and his sleep brake from him is the text's own note that this is no ordinary unease. The king summons the full guild of Babylon's wisdom, magicians, astrologers, sorcerers, and Chaldeans, four terms the bench reads as overlapping schools rather than four distinct offices, all called to the same impossible task. He does not ask them to interpret a dream he will describe; he demands they name it first, which turns the whole scene into a test of whether their arts reach beyond guesswork.

Daniel 2:4-6

The Chaldeans answer in Syriack, the Aramaic that carries the book from here through chapter seven, the empire's own diplomatic tongue used for an empire's own oracle of its end. Their opening flattery, O king, live for ever, is court form rather than confidence, and their request, tell thy servants the dream, exposes that they expect only to interpret, not to discover. The king's answer removes that escape, dismemberment and a leveled house for failure, wealth and honor for success, stakes set high enough that no vague answer can survive them.

Daniel 2:7-9

The wise men repeat their request nearly word for word, and the repetition itself is the giveaway the king seizes on, I know of certainty that ye would gain the time, since the thing is gone from him, not forgotten but withheld by the same God who will shortly restore it to Daniel. Barnes reads the king's suspicion as shrewd rather than merely cruel, a ruler who has met professional flattery before and will not be delayed by it. The decree the king threatens is not yet spoken here, but the standoff that produces it is fully drawn.

Daniel 2:10-11

The Chaldeans' answer is candid in a way nothing before it has been, there is not a man upon the earth that can shew the king's matter, no king before Nebuchadnezzar has ever asked such a thing, and the reason follows in a sentence that indicts their own gods, except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh. The bench notes the irony the narrative sets up without comment, pagan seers confessing that the very gods they serve do not walk among men, in a book about to show the God of heaven doing exactly what they say cannot be done.

Daniel 2:12-13

wise men of Babylon: The king's fury turns a private failure into a general execution, commanding to destroy all the wise men of Babylon, and the decree's reach is wide enough to catch Daniel and his fellows though they were never summoned to the first audience. Henry reads the breadth of the sentence as proof of how far unchecked anger will overreach its actual cause, punishing men who had not yet been asked the question at all. The scene turns on this overreach, it is the decree's injustice that brings Daniel into the story.

Daniel 2:14-16

Daniel answered with counsel and wisdom to Arioch, the phrase itself the bench reads as a small model of how to meet an unjust order, calm inquiry rather than panic or resistance. His question, why is the decree so hasty, buys the information he needs, and he goes in to the king himself to ask for time, a request granted where the Chaldeans' stalling was refused because Daniel asks it having already resolved to answer rather than to delay.

Daniel 2:17-19

Daniel brings the crisis home to his three companions and asks them to desire mercies of the God of heaven together, the chapter's answer to how faith carries an impossible deadline, prayer shared rather than carried alone. The secret is revealed unto Daniel in a night vision, the same gift promised him at 1:17 now exercised for the first time, and his first act is to bless the God of heaven before he tells another soul. The order matters to the bench, worship comes before the report, gratitude before the reward it makes possible.

Daniel 2:20-23

Blessed be the name of God: Daniel's hymn credits wisdom and might, the changing of times and seasons, and the removing and setting up of kings entirely to God, language the bench reads as the chapter's own theology stated before the king ever hears the interpretation, every throne in the vision to come, including Nebuchadnezzar's, stands or falls by this same hand. He revealeth the deep and secret things, and knoweth what is in the darkness, is praised for a gift already received rather than one still hoped for, and the God of my fathers ties Daniel's private revelation to the whole covenant history behind him.

Daniel 2:24-25

Daniel goes to Arioch with the decree's reversal in his mouth before he has even stood before the king, Destroy not the wise men of Babylon, staking the lives of men who never sought his interpretation on the confidence that God has already given him the answer. Arioch's own account to the king, changed from what actually happened, I have found a man of the captives of Judah, is read by the bench as a courtier's habit of claiming credit, a small human touch the narrative does not bother to correct.

Daniel 2:26-30

The king's question repeats the original impossible demand, and Daniel's answer opens by conceding it outright, the wise men, astrologers, magicians and soothsayers cannot shew it, a flat agreement with everything the Chaldeans already said. What follows is the pivot the whole scene has been built for, there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets, and Daniel refuses even his own credit for what is coming, this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living, insisting the revelation serves the king's understanding and the wise men's rescue rather than Daniel's own reputation.

Daniel 2:31-33

The image's four metals descending in value, gold, silver, brass, iron mixed at the last with clay, are read by the whole bench as a decline in nobility even as the empires grow harder and more crushing in their power, gold's softness giving way to iron's strength and iron's own inability finally to hold. The form terrible and the brightness excellent together describe something meant to awe before it is ever explained, an image built the way empire itself is built, magnificent to look at and unstable at the foundation.

Daniel 2:34-36

The stone cut out without hands strikes precisely where the image is weakest, the feet of iron and clay, and the whole structure breaks together and blows away like chaff, no trace remaining, while the stone itself becomes a great mountain and fills the whole earth. The older writers, Henry among them, read the stone Christologically, a kingdom not built by any human hand set against every kingdom that is; the reading is carried here with its holders rather than pressed as the only one the verse allows, though the site's own tradition stands with it. The totality of the image's destruction, no place was found for them, is the detail the bench marks against every reading that would let one of the old empires simply continue under a new name.

Daniel 2:37-38

king of kings: Daniel names Nebuchadnezzar a king of kings and credits every power he holds, dominion over children of men, beasts of the field and fowls of the heaven, to the God of heaven who gave it, not to Babylon's own strength. Thou art this head of gold gives the traditional four-empire reading its fixed first term, Babylon named by the text itself, the identification every later reading of the image's remaining metals has to build from.

Daniel 2:39-43

The traditional line, the site's own tradition among them, reads the silver kingdom inferior to Babylon as Medo-Persia, the brass bearing rule over all the earth as Greece, and the fourth kingdom strong as iron as Rome, a line argued at length by Pusey and defended against Porphyry's late dating by Jerome; a critical reading holds the fourth kingdom terminates in the divided Hellenistic empires after Alexander, the Greek-terminus line named here with its holders rather than erased. The feet's iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men but not cleave one to another, is read across both lines as a divided final state, strong in parts and brittle at the joints, whichever kingdoms the reader assigns to it.

Daniel 2:44-45

In the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed is the interpretation's own summit, a kingdom that does not merely outlast the others but breaks them in pieces and consumes them while it stands for ever, language the bench reads as excluding any merely human successor state. The dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure closes the vision with a claim of certainty the wise men's whole guild could never have made, and the great God who hath made known what shall come to pass hereafter is credited a second time before Nebuchadnezzar has said a word in reply.

Daniel 2:46-49

Nebuchadnezzar falls upon his face and worships Daniel, commanding an oblation and sweet odours offered to him, an act the bench reads as sincere but badly aimed, honor owed to the God who revealed the secret paid instead to the man who reported it. The king's own confession, of a truth it is, that your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, is the chapter's answer to its opening impossibility, spoken in the conqueror's own mouth rather than argued by his captives. Daniel is made ruler over the whole province of Babylon and secures the same standing for Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, while he himself sits in the gate of the king, the seat of daily judgment, closing the chapter with the four exactly where chapter one's test first aimed them.
