Acts 5:1-2

Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, the very act Barnabas had just performed at the end of chapter four, and the pairing sets the contrast the narrative means to draw. The couple kept back part of the price while presenting the gift as though it were the whole, so the sin is not the sum given but the pretense of totality. Gill and Henry both note that nothing in the law of the church required any believer to sell property or to give all the proceeds, which is what makes the deception, not the withholding, the offense that follows.

Acts 5:3-4

Peter names the source plainly, Satan filled thine heart, set against the Spirit's filling that has marked the church since Pentecost, one heart open to one master or the other. His question in verse four, was it not thine own, and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power, confirms that the property and the price were Ananias's to keep or give as he chose, so the lie was gratuitous. Peter's closing line, thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God, treats lying to the Holy Ghost as lying to God directly, an identification the bench reads as a plain witness to the Spirit's deity.

Acts 5:5-6

Ananias fell down and gave up the ghost on the spot, a judgment as immediate as it is severe, and great fear came on all them that heard these things. The young men wound him up and buried him without waiting for family or ceremony, following the custom of prompt burial in the heat of Jerusalem. Bede and Henry read the swiftness of the sentence as a mercy to the infant church, guarding the fellowship's integrity at the very hour false pretense first entered it.

Acts 5:7-10

Sapphira comes in not knowing what was done, and Peter gives her the same opening Ananias had, a direct question rather than an accusation, so that her answer is her own choice. She repeats the lie word for word, and Peter names the deeper offense, to tempt the Spirit of the Lord, testing how far a false profession could go unchallenged. She falls at his feet exactly as her husband had, and the young men who buried him find her dead and carry her out to lie beside him.

Acts 5:11

Great fear came upon all the church, the first place in Acts the word church names the whole gathered body of believers rather than a single congregation's meeting. The bench reads the fear as reverence for a holy God present among his people, not mere alarm, the same fear that runs through Isaiah's temple vision and Israel's own approach to Sinai. Chrysostom presses the point that a church which no longer fears such things has lost something Pentecost gave it.

Acts 5:12-14

By the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people, and the church meets openly with one accord in Solomon's porch, the same temple colonnade where Peter had preached in chapter three. Outsiders durst no man join himself to them, yet the people magnified them, an odd mixture of holy distance and public honor that the bench reads as the church's own fear in verse eleven spreading outward. Multitudes both of men and women were added to the Lord, growth measured in believers rather than in noise.

Acts 5:15-16

The sick are laid in the streets in hope that the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them, and multitudes from the cities round about bring their sick and those vexed with unclean spirits, and they were healed every one. The book of Acts pairs this scene with Paul's handkerchiefs and aprons at Ephesus in chapter nineteen, one of several deliberate parallels between the two apostles' ministries. Chrysostom and the later bench alike caution that the shadow itself carried no power of its own, the healing coming from the same Lord who had healed through Peter's hands at the temple gate.

Acts 5:17-18

The high priest and his party, identified here as the sect of the Sadducees, rise up filled with indignation, and the bench takes note of the identification because Sadducean doctrine denied the resurrection of the dead. A movement proclaiming a risen man from the dead in the temple's own courts struck directly at that party's teaching, which sharpens their motive beyond mere jealousy of popularity. They lay hands on the apostles and put them in the common prison, the first arrest of the group as a whole.

Acts 5:19-21

The angel of the Lord by night opens the prison doors and brings them out, and the instruction given is not escape but return, go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life. The apostles obey at once and enter the temple early in the morning to teach, back in the very courts where they had just been arrested. The bench reads the command's wording, all the words of this life, as naming the whole gospel message rather than any partial or private word.

Acts 5:22-26

The officers return and found them not in the prison, and their report to the council describes a prison shut with all safety and keepers standing at the doors, yet no man within. The high priest and the chief priests doubted of them whereunto this would grow, uncertain rulers facing a fact their categories cannot absorb, until word comes that the apostles are already teaching in the temple. The captain brings them without violence, for they feared the people, lest they should have been stoned, the crowd's favor now working as a shield the council itself dares not cross.

Acts 5:27-28

They set them before the council, and the high priest's charge repeats the earlier command from chapter four almost word for word, that ye should not teach in this name. He adds a second complaint, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, which the bench reads as an unwilling witness to how quickly and widely the apostles' preaching had already spread through the city. His closing phrase, to bring this man's blood upon us, shows the charge of the crucifixion still weighing on the council's own conscience.

Acts 5:29-32

Peter's answer for the whole group, we ought to obey God rather than men, states the limit of civil and religious obedience without dissolving it, a principle the bench applies narrowly to a direct command against what God has commanded rather than to authority in general. He restates the resurrection witness formula of chapter two, the God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree, and adds the exaltation, a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. His closing claim, we are his witnesses of these things, and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him, joins the apostles' testimony to the Spirit's own, the mark of a right hearing being obedience rather than mere assent.

Acts 5:33

The council is cut to the heart and took counsel to slay them, the same phrase cut to the heart that will describe a very different response in chapter two, conviction there opening to repentance, here hardening into rage. The bench reads the contrast as the same word landing on two different soils, one broken and one closed. Only Gamaliel's intervention in the verses that follow stands between the apostles and the death the council is already resolved on.

Acts 5:34-35

One in the council, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in reputation among all the people, rises and has the apostles put outside a little space before he speaks. He is named in the Mishnah as one of the great teachers of his generation and is elsewhere identified as Paul's own teacher in chapter twenty-two, which gives his caution here an added weight the bench does not pass over. Ye men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what ye intend to do as touching these men, opens an argument built entirely from recent history rather than from Scripture.

Acts 5:36-39

Gamaliel cites two failed movements, Theudas with about four hundred followers and Judas of Galilee in the days of the taxing, both scattered once their leaders were slain, as evidence that a merely human enterprise burns itself out. Josephus records a Theudas under the procurator Fadus in the mid-forties, a date that falls after this speech is set, and the bench names the standard resolutions honestly, an earlier Theudas otherwise unrecorded, a common name behind two distinct men, or a memory lapse in either source, without settling which. Gamaliel's own conclusion, if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it, lest haply ye be found even to fight against God, is the test he offers the council, and it is a test rather than an endorsement of the apostles' message.

Acts 5:40-42

The council agrees to Gamaliel's caution but cannot let the apostles go without a beating, and they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus before releasing them. The apostles depart rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name, the boldness thread of the book turning suffering itself into cause for joy rather than deterrence. Daily in the temple and in every house they continue without pause to teach and preach Jesus Christ, the command to silence answered by its exact opposite.
