1 Samuel 1:1-2

Elkanah's household carries two wives into a story that will not need to name the sin twice, for Peninnah's children and Hannah's shut womb do the naming for it. Hannah stands in a line of barren wives that Genesis and Judges already wrote, Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel and the wife of Manoah before her, each one opened by the Lord rather than by nature. The chapter's whole weight rests on the phrase still to come in verse five, the Lord had shut up her womb, and any reader of the earlier books already knows what that withholding usually means.

1 Samuel 1:3

The title the Lord of hosts enters Scripture for the first time in this verse, at Shiloh, in a family bringing its yearly sacrifice rather than at any council of war; 17:45 will later give the name its battle sense, the God of the armies of Israel. Hophni and Phinehas are named here as the priests of the Lord, and the reader who has not yet reached chapter two already meets the men whose corruption will empty this same sanctuary. Shiloh stands at its height in this verse, and the book never lets it stand so high again.

1 Samuel 1:4-6

Elkanah divides the yearly portions by household, and the double portion he gives Hannah for his love of her only sharpens what love cannot fix. Peninnah is named her adversary, a word used elsewhere of a legal accuser, and her provoking is deliberate and yearly rather than a single cruelty. The refrain because the Lord had shut up her womb closes both verse five and verse six, so the narrator, not Peninnah, names the true cause of Hannah's grief.

1 Samuel 1:7-8

The provoking happens year by year at the house of the Lord itself, and Hannah answers it with silence and a fast rather than a quarrel. Elkanah's question, am not I better to thee than ten sons, is tender and still misses the point, since a husband's love cannot fill the place a child was made to fill. Ten is the largest number a man of that household could imagine giving, offered precisely where nothing offered would do.

1 Samuel 1:9-11

Temple of the Lord occurs here for the first time in Scripture, said of Shiloh's tent structure centuries before Solomon lays one stone, and the word outruns the building it first names. Hannah's vow reaches back into the law itself: there shall no razor come upon his head repeats the Nazirite statute of Numbers 6:5 and the angel's word over Samson at Judges 13:5, the only three no-razor verses in the Bible. Samson took that vow and broke it; Hannah gives it to a son not yet conceived, and Samuel keeps it where the deliverer before him could not.

1 Samuel 1:12-14

Eli watches her lips move without sound and reads wine into a silence that was actually prayer pushed past speech. It is the priest at Shiloh's own altar who cannot tell true devotion from drunkenness, a small early sign of the discernment failing in Eli's house that the coming chapters will show at full scale. The rebuke, how long wilt thou be drunken, falls on the one worshipper in the chapter who is actually seeking the Lord.

1 Samuel 1:15-16

Hannah corrects the priest without anger, naming her true state a sorrowful spirit rather than a drunken one, and her own phrase, poured out my soul before the Lord, is the chapter's clearest picture of what her prayer actually was. Daughter of Belial, a term for worthlessness, is the very charge Eli laid without asking, and Hannah answers it only by explaining the abundance of her complaint and grief. The word Belial returns later in this book at 2:12, where Eli's own sons are called sons of Belial, a distance the reader is left to notice.

1 Samuel 1:17-18

Eli's blessing, go in peace, and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition, is spoken without any word yet of what the petition was, and Hannah receives it as answered before she has any child to show for it. Her countenance was no more sad marks the turn of the whole chapter, not because her circumstances had changed but because she believed a word spoken over her. The older writers read this verse as the model of a faith that rests before it sees.

1 Samuel 1:19-20

the Lord remembered her: The Lord remembered her closes the vow-taking with the shortest possible answer, and Samuel's name itself, because I have asked him of the Lord, ties the boy permanently to the request that produced him. The Hebrew play runs closer than the English shows, for the root behind asked is the same root carried by Saul's own name a chapter away, a coincidence the narrator lets stand without comment. Hannah names her son for a prayer answered rather than for a father's house, unusual in a book otherwise full of genealogies.

1 Samuel 1:21-23

Elkanah goes up for the yearly sacrifice and his own vow, but Hannah asks to stay home until the child is weaned, an interval ancient nursing practice measured in years rather than months. Elkanah's answer, only the Lord establish his word, submits his own headship to what Hannah has already promised, and the marriage becomes a partnership in keeping the vow rather than a dispute over it. Numbers 30 gives a husband power to disallow his wife's vow on the day he hears it; Elkanah confirms it instead, and the law itself explains why Hannah's vow stands unbroken.

1 Samuel 1:24-25

Three bullocks, an ephah of flour and a bottle of wine make the offering generous beyond a poor family's obligation, and the text adds, and the child was young, so the reader watching a small boy brought permanently from home feels the weight of the gift alongside her. They slay a bullock and bring the child to Eli in the same breath, the sacrifice and the surrender narrated as one act. Hannah gives away in a sentence what she prayed years for in a chapter.

1 Samuel 1:26-28

Hannah identifies herself to Eli as the very woman he rebuked for drunkenness, and the identification is itself an act of grace, since she could have let the moment pass unremarked. For this child I prayed answers the vow of verse eleven word for word, and as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the Lord makes the loan permanent rather than temporary, for Samuel never returns to Ramah as anything but a visitor. The chapter that opened with a barren woman closes with a boy worshipping at Shiloh, and the book's next chapter is her own words about it.
