1 Samuel 13:1-2

The Hebrew of this opening verse is famously short, and the two summarizing numbers a reader expects are thought missing or corrupted, so much that the Septuagint omits the verse outright. Acts 13:21 supplies the round number this book never gives on its own page, forty years for Saul's whole reign. Saul divides his standing force here, two thousand at Michmash under himself and a thousand at Gibeah under Jonathan, the first sign of the permanent army a king like the nations was expected to keep.

1 Samuel 13:3-4

Let the Hebrews hear: Jonathan's strike on the Philistine post at Geba is the spark, and Saul's trumpet spreads word of it through the land, the same horn and beacon relay the older commentators trace town to town. Israel's report of itself is blunt, that Israel had made itself odious to the Philistines, the language of a small people who has just provoked an empire. The army gathers to Saul at Gilgal, the same town where Samuel had renewed the kingdom to him at 11:15, so the chapter's crisis unfolds on the ground of his own coronation.

1 Samuel 13:5-7

Thirty thousand chariots is a number far beyond anything else the biblical text lets Philistia field, and a more conservative reading, a copyist's slip for three hundred, is argued by comparing similar numeral variants between Samuel and its Chronicles parallel. Whatever the true count, the host is described as sand on the seashore, and Israel's answer is not resistance but disappearance, into caves, thickets, rocks, high places and pits, with some crossing the Jordan outright. Saul is left at Gilgal with a shrinking, trembling remnant, the pressure that drives his decision two verses later.

1 Samuel 13:8-9

The set time is 10:8, where Samuel had told Saul before ever the kingdom began, seven days shalt thou tarry, till I come to thee. Saul keeps the letter of it, waiting out the full seven days while his army bleeds away man by man, and breaks at the very edge of the appointed hour rather than trust the word to hold one hour past a soldier's patience. He offers the burnt offering himself, a king performing a priest's act, and the whole weight of the chapter turns on the space between waiting almost long enough and waiting long enough.

1 Samuel 13:10-12

Samuel arrives at the very moment the offering ends, so the text itself measures the wait Saul could not finish: one interval closer and the king would have kept the commandment whole. Saul's account in verses 11 and 12 stacks three complaints before he ever names his own act, the people scattering, Samuel's own lateness, and the Philistines massing at Michmash, the shape of a man defending himself rather than confessing. I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering is his own verb for it, forced, the language of a man who knew the act was not his to perform even as he did it.

1 Samuel 13:13-14

Thou hast done foolishly is Samuel's verdict on the burnt offering, and the sentence that follows is the first of two failures this book records against Saul, the second coming at chapter 15 over Amalek. The Lord hath sought him a man after his own heart names no one yet, David is three chapters away, but Acts 13:22 quotes this very clause of him, and Acts 13:21 in the same breath gives Saul the forty year reign this book never states in a single verse of its own. For ever in verse 13 is read two ways among the older writers, some taking it as a real offer of a lasting dynasty forfeited here, others reading forever in its ordinary scriptural sense of a long duration, already satisfied by a two generation kingdom; either way the kingdom does not pass to Saul's line.

1 Samuel 13:15-16

about six hundred men: Samuel leaves Saul at Gilgal and the army is counted at six hundred men, a remnant of the three thousand chosen at verse two and a fraction of the three hundred thousand Saul once mustered for Jabesh-gilead at 11:8. The numbers carry the chapter's whole argument without a word of comment: a king who could summon a nation in chapter eleven is reduced to a garrison in chapter thirteen, and the cause the text has just named is disobedience, not the size of the enemy. Gibeah, Saul's own town, becomes the last standing camp while the Philistines hold Michmash across the pass.

1 Samuel 13:17-18

Three raiding companies fan out from the Philistine camp toward three compass points, north to Ophrah, west to Beth-horon on the road into the heart of the land, and east toward the valley of Zeboim on the wilderness edge, so the whole hill country is worked over at once. The detail matters because it explains why the next verses report no smith left in the land, for a raiding force this thorough would have swept up the very tools of iron working along with the grain. Michmash sits at the center of the arc, the pass the garrison holds through the rest of this chapter and into the next.

1 Samuel 13:19-21

The Philistines' fear is stated as policy, lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears, and the older commentators read it as a deliberate embargo, smiths transplanted and the trade forbidden under penalty though Israel's own hills held iron and brass in plenty. Every plowshare, mattock, axe and goad in Israel had to be carried down to a Philistine smith even to be sharpened, and the file of verse 21 is the one edge tool the text allows an Israelite to keep in his own hand. The monopoly explains what verse 22 states outright, and it is the same disarmed nation standing behind both Jonathan's exploit in the next chapter and David's unarmed answer to Goliath in the seventeenth.

1 Samuel 13:22

The verse counts the whole camp's weaponry down to two swords, Saul's own and Jonathan's, against a Philistine host numbered in the thousands two verses before. The bow and the sling needed no smith, and Israel was not without those, but the narrator's point is narrower: on the day of pitched battle, only the king and his son carried the blade and spear that close combat required. The same bare phrase, no sword in the hand, will describe David facing Goliath four chapters later, though there it marks a chosen weakness rather than an enforced one.

1 Samuel 13:23

The verse is a single geographic notice, but it names the exact ground chapter fourteen will use: Jonathan's crossing toward the Philistine post begins at this same passage, between the two sharp rocks the next chapter will name Bozez and Seneh. The garrison holding this pass is the one Jonathan and his armourbearer, the only other blade left in Israel besides Saul's own, will climb up alone to face.
