Judah is the largest tribe at 74,600, which John Calvin reads beside Genesis 49:10, “The scepter will not depart from Judah”. Chapter 2 sets Judah first on the march.

Among the twelve entries, the words one by one stand only with Reuben and Simeon. From Gad at verse 24 the entry reads counting the names, and Jamieson, Fausset and Brown gloss the fuller phrase as individually, one by one. Every tribe was counted by one rule, Matthew Henry says.

Of the two half-tribes of Joseph, who is seen to be "a fruitful bough" [Ge 49:22], that of Ephraim was the larger, as had been predicted. The relative increase of all, as in the two just mentioned, was owing to the special blessing of God, conformably to the prophetic declaration of the dying patriarch.
