Chapter summary
The camp order. The twelve tribes camp in four three-tribe divisions around the tabernacle — Judah eastward (Judah, Issachar, Zebulun — 186,400); Reuben southward (Reuben, Simeon, Gad — 151,450); Ephraim westward (Ephraim, Manasseh, Benjamin — 108,100); Dan northward (Dan, Asher, Naphtali — 157,600). The Levites in the midst of the camp about the tabernacle. The order of march matches: Judah first, then Reuben, then the tabernacle, then Ephraim, then Dan as rearguard. Calvin notes the theological shape: the covenant tent is the centre, not the king's tent, and Judah leads because the messianic promise is already whispered.
