Judah is the largest tribe at 74,600, which John Calvin reads beside Genesis 49:10, “The scepter will not depart from Judah”. Chapter 2 sets Judah first on the march.

Matthew Henry measures Judah against the rest: more than double Benjamin and Manasseh, and almost 12,000 above any other tribe. He links the strength to the post Judah is about to take at the head of the march. Judah grows to 76,500 by Numbers 26:22.

It was also the effect of the blessing of Joseph, who was to be a fruitful bough, Gen. xlix. And Ephraim the younger is put first, and is more numerous than Manasseh, for Jacob had crossed hands, and foreseen ten thousands of Ephraim and thousands of Manasseh. The fulfilling of this confirms our faith in the spirit of prophecy with which the patriarchs were endued.

Of the two half-tribes of Joseph, who is seen to be "a fruitful bough" [Ge 49:22], that of Ephraim was the larger, as had been predicted. The relative increase of all, as in the two just mentioned, was owing to the special blessing of God, conformably to the prophetic declaration of the dying patriarch.
