Judah is the largest tribe at 74,600, which John Calvin reads beside Genesis 49:10, “The scepter will not depart from Judah”. Chapter 2 sets Judah first on the march.

Reuben, the firstborn, musters 46,500, seventh of the twelve. John Calvin reads the figure as a mark of the curse on Reuben, since Simeon, Issachar, Zebulun, Dan and Naphtali all outnumber him. At Numbers 26:7 the tribe stands at 43,730, down 2,770.

Of the two half-tribes of Joseph, who is seen to be "a fruitful bough" [Ge 49:22], that of Ephraim was the larger, as had been predicted. The relative increase of all, as in the two just mentioned, was owing to the special blessing of God, conformably to the prophetic declaration of the dying patriarch.
