From the sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel

on Numbers 1:20-31

Judah is the largest tribe at 74,600, which John Calvin reads beside Genesis 49:10, “The scepter will not depart from Judah”. Chapter 2 sets Judah first on the march.

This site's exposition

From the sons of Zebulun

Zebulun is Leah's sixth son, named at Genesis 30:20 in hope that her husband would honour her. Jacob and Moses both name Zebulun ahead of his elder brother Issachar, at Genesis 49:13 and Deuteronomy 33:18. John Wesley notes the count keeps the order of birth.

proposed

Of the two half-tribes of Joseph, who is seen to be "a fruitful bough" [Ge 49:22], that of Ephraim was the larger, as had been predicted. The relative increase of all, as in the two just mentioned, was owing to the special blessing of God, conformably to the prophetic declaration of the dying patriarch.
