From the sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel

Judah is the largest tribe at 74,600, which John Calvin reads beside Genesis 49:10, “The scepter will not depart from Judah”. Chapter 2 sets Judah first on the march.
This site's exposition
From the sons of Judah
Leah named her fourth son Judah at Genesis 29:35, as a word of praise to the LORD. Matthew Henry reads the tribe's great numbers as God honouring Judah for the sake of the Messiah to come from it. Hebrews 7:14 names that descent.

proposed
Of the two half-tribes of Joseph, who is seen to be "a fruitful bough" [Ge 49:22], that of Ephraim was the larger, as had been predicted. The relative increase of all, as in the two just mentioned, was owing to the special blessing of God, conformably to the prophetic declaration of the dying patriarch.
