5 notes on this verseThirty five thousand - The smallest number, except one, though Benjamin had more immediate children than any of his brethren, Gen. xlvi, 21, whereas Daniel had but one immediate son, Gen. xlvi, 23, yet now his number is the biggest but one of all the tribes, and is almost double to that of Benjamin.

Joseph is counted as two tribes, and Ephraim at 40,500 stands above Manasseh at 32,200. Jacob had crossed his hands at Genesis 48:14-20 and said “his younger brother shall be greater than he”. The roll reads that way generations later.

John Wesley calls Benjamin's figure the smallest but one, though Benjamin had more sons than any brother. He reads it as one of the great changes God makes in families, citing 1 Samuel 2:5. The tribe grows to 45,600 by Numbers 26:41, and Judges 20:47 later leaves it 600 men.

Of the two half-tribes of Joseph, who is seen to be "a fruitful bough" [Ge 49:22], that of Ephraim was the larger, as had been predicted. The relative increase of all, as in the two just mentioned, was owing to the special blessing of God, conformably to the prophetic declaration of the dying patriarch.
