From the sons of Joseph
on Numbers 1:32-43
Joseph is counted as two tribes, and Ephraim at 40,500 stands above Manasseh at 32,200. Jacob had crossed his hands at Genesis 48:14-20 and said “his younger brother shall be greater than he”. The roll reads that way generations later.

Joseph's two tribes together muster 72,700, and Matthew Henry notes that they come almost to Judah's 74,600. Manasseh supplies the smaller share. Jacob had called Joseph a fruitful vine at Genesis 49:22, and Henry reads both figures as that blessing.

proposed
Of the two half-tribes of Joseph, who is seen to be "a fruitful bough" [Ge 49:22], that of Ephraim was the larger, as had been predicted. The relative increase of all, as in the two just mentioned, was owing to the special blessing of God, conformably to the prophetic declaration of the dying patriarch.
