Coats - See Exo 28:39. Life had been extinguished as if by a flash of lightning, but neither the bodies nor the dresses were destroyed.

on Leviticus 10:4-5
Moses calls two first cousins of Aaron, Levites rather than priests, because Aaron and his surviving sons may not leave the door of the tent. They carry the bodies out in their coats, so the priestly garments came through the fire whole. The fire took the men and left their clothing, and the bodies go out of the camp, which is where Leviticus 4:12 sends the remains of a sin offering.

In their coats - In the holy garments wherein they ministered; which might be done, either, 1. as a testimony of respect due to them, notwithstanding their present failure; and that God in judgment remembered mercy, and when he took away their lives, spared their souls.

God was now teaching his people obedience, and to do every thing by rule, as becomes servants; for priests therefore to break rules and disobey was such a provocation as must by no means go unpunished. Their character made their sin more exceedingly sinful.
