Commentary
5 notes on this verseAnd indeed we said above that even our Lord Jesus Christ asks us for a place he may build and in which he may live and that we ought to become so clean of heart, and so sincere of mind, so holy in body and spirit, that he may both deign to accept this place in our soul and to build it and dwell in it. And who do you think among all the people are so acceptable to God that they are worthy to be chosen for this?
This site's exposition
gave an inheritance to Joshua
on Joshua 19:49-51
Joshua is served last, after every tribe has its portion, and he receives his by the people's gift rather than by taking it. The grant comes according to the word of the Lord, the same ground on which Caleb received Hebron at 14:13, so the two men who brought back the good report at Numbers 14 stand at the head of the allotment and at its close. Timnath-serah is where Joshua is buried at 24:30, and Judges 2:9 records the name as Timnath-heres. The division ends where chapter 18 began it, at Shiloh before the Lord, at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
The record, by era
The Puritans and the Awakening1 voice
The word of The Lord - As God had promised, or commanded; either formerly, or at this time by Eleazar. He built - That is, repaired and enlarged it, in which sense Nebuchadnezzar is said to have built Babylon, Dan. iv, 30.
The Nineteenth Century2 voices
Timnath-serah - Called Timnath-heres in Jdg 2:9, where we find that the mountain on which it was built was called Gaash. It is generally allowed to have been a barren spot in a barren country.

Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible (1871)
But the gift was not left to the spontaneous feelings of a grateful people. It was conferred "according to the word of the Lord"--probably an unrecorded promise, similar to what had been made to Caleb (Jos 14:9).
