7 notes on this verseThus did Noah - He prepared the ark; and during one hundred and twenty years preached righteousness to that sinful generation, 2Pe 2:5. And this we are informed, 1Pe 3:18, 1Pe 3:19, etc., he did by the Spirit of Christ; for it was only through him that the doctrine of repentance could ever be successfully preached. The people in Noah’s time are represented as shut up in prison - arrested and condemned by God’s justice, but graciously allowed the space of one hundred and twenty years to repent in.

The creatures come to Noah on their own, two of every kind, to be kept alive. What he is told to do is gather food for himself and for the animals. The chapter closes on one line, that Noah did everything as God commanded. 2 Peter 2:5 calls him a preacher of righteousness.

Noah does all he is commanded again at 7:5, and Exodus 40:16 uses the same form of Moses. Hebrews 11:7 calls his work on the ark faith. Clarke held that Noah preached to his generation through the 120 years.
