The forty days are kept again, face down and for the people. Barnes takes verse 18 for the second forty days of Exodus 34:28, told more fully at verse 25.

Moses gives his own fear as the motive of the fast. Matthew Henry suggests he feared for himself as well as for the people, since God's anger was turned on the whole camp. The closing words, this time as well, count this answer among earlier ones.
