Shalmaneser king of Assyria marched against Samaria

on 2 Kings 18:9-10

The narrator dates the fall of Samaria by Hezekiah's reign, the fourth to the sixth, tying Judah's king to the disaster chapter 17 has recounted. The text gives the span, "at the end of three years," here and at 17:5, and the repetition fixes the number.

This site's exposition

at the end of three years

The siege ran from Hezekiah's fourth year into his sixth. Gill takes the end of three years to mean the opening of the third, the sense he gives the same phrase at Deuteronomy 15:1. Omri had built Samaria as Israel's capital at 1 Kings 16:24.

And at the end of three years they took it,.... That is, at the first end of them, at the beginning, in which sense the phrase is taken in Deu 15:1, even in the sixth year of Hezekiah, that is, the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken: see 2Ki 17:6.
