Hezekiah . . . sent to Lachish, saying, . . . that which thou puttest on me will I bear--Disappointed in his expectations of aid from Egypt, and feeling himself unable to resist so mighty a conqueror who was menacing Jerusalem itself, Hezekiah made his submission.

Hezekiah strips the house of the LORD. The act recalls Asa at 1 Kings 15:18 and Ahaz at 2 Kings 16:8. Sennacherib's Taylor Prism lists thirty talents of gold, though it gives eight hundred talents of silver against the text's three hundred, a difference left open.

Hezekiah had opened and repaired these temple doors for the LORD in the first month of his reign, as 2 Chronicles 29:3 records. Barnes says he was compelled to undo his own work. The gold bought Jerusalem no safety from the king of Assyria, as verse 17 shows.
