Joab fought against Rabbah of the Ammonites and captured the royal fortress

on 2 Samuel 12:26-28

Joab captures “the water supply of the city” and sends for David: “Otherwise I will capture the city, and it will be named after me”. The request brings David back to the field he stayed away from in chapter 11, the absence that opened the way to Bathsheba.

Jamieson, Fausset and Brown note that Eastern kings kept the honours of war for themselves. A city took the name of its conqueror, so the final assault had to be the king's own. A large force was raised for it.
