In his fate was fulfilled the prophecy addressed to Jehu (2Ki 10:30; also Ho 1:4), that his family would possess the throne of Israel for four generations; and accordingly Jehoahaz, Joash, Jehoram, and Zechariah were his successors--but there his dynasty terminated; and perhaps it was the public knowledge of this prediction that prompted the murderous design of Shallum.

on 2 Kings 15:8-9
Zechariah was the last king of Jehu's line, and his six months show how fast the north's order failed after its strongest king died. The formula that has measured every northern king since the first Jeroboam returns. The chapter repeats it at verses 9, 18, 24 and 28.

His fathers are the kings of Jehu's house before him. Jehu himself had kept the golden calves at Bethel and Dan, at 10:29, and each son after him kept them too. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown suggested that the known limit of four generations at 10:30 prompted Shallum's plot.
