on 1 Chronicles 11:1-3
Chronicles opens David's reign already unified. The civil war against Ish-bosheth that fills 2 Samuel 2 to 4 is never retold, and all Israel came to David at Hebron. Verse 3 grounds the anointing in the word of the LORD through Samuel, the choice made at 1 Samuel 16.

You will shepherd My people
Leading Israel out and bringing them back is the language of a war leader, and David earned it in 1 Samuel 18:13 to 16. David kept his father's sheep (1 Samuel 16:11), and the LORD names him shepherd of His people. Ezekiel 34:23 uses the figure for the coming David.
