Asahel the brother of Joab

on 1 Chronicles 11:26-31

The roll opens with Asahel the brother of Joab, killed in 2 Samuel 2:23. Chronicles' list numbers forty-seven names against Samuel's thirty-one at 2 Samuel 23:24 to 39. Four names appear only here and five only there, and the rest vary enough that one original list could stand behind both.

This site's exposition

Shammoth the Harorite

Shammoth the Harorite and Helez the Pelonite are the third and fourth of the mighty men in the list from verse 26. In 2 Samuel 23:25 to 26 the names read Shammah the Harodite and Helez the Paltite, with Elika between them. Chronicles has no Elika.

3 Therefore came all the elders of Israel to the king to Hebron; and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the L ORD ; and they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the L ORD by Samuel. 4 And David and all Israel went to Jerusalem, which is Jebus; where the Jebusites were, the inhabitants of the land.
