The roll opens with Asahel the brother of Joab, killed in 2 Samuel 2:23. Chronicles' list numbers forty-seven names against Samuel's thirty-one at 2 Samuel 23:24 to 39. Four names appear only here and five only there, and the rest vary enough that one original list could stand behind both.

Netophah was a town near Bethlehem, paired with it in Nehemiah 7:26. Both men command monthly divisions in 1 Chronicles 27:13 and 15, where Heled appears as Heldai. 2 Samuel 23:29 spells him Heleb.
