Revelation 2:1-3

Ephesus hears from the one who holdeth the seven stars in his right hand and walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks, the very picture John saw at 1:13 and 1:16 turned into a personal address: the Lord who owns the churches also walks among them. The commendation is full, works, labour, patience, and a sharp test applied to those who say they are apostles, and are not, a discernment John's own church at Ephesus is remembered for exercising against error. Thy patience repeated twice in three verses marks a church that had endured much without growing weary in the task.

Revelation 2:4-5

Nevertheless turns commendation into charge: thou hast left thy first love, the ardour of a bride for her betrothed cooled into duty, however busy the hands remained. The remedy is threefold and puts the church back where it began, remember, repent, and do the first works, and the warning is concrete, or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place. Adam Clarke reads the removed candlestick as the light of testimony withdrawn from a congregation that trades love for orthodoxy without warmth, and history bore the warning out, Ephesus itself is a ruin today.

Revelation 2:6-7

One thing stands to Ephesus's credit even in its decline, that it hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate, the Lord naming his own hatred alongside theirs. Who the Nicolaitans were is not settled from the text itself; a patristic memory ties them to Nicolas of Antioch, one of the seven of Acts 6:5, though the connection is a tradition rather than a certainty the text confirms, and what the passage fixes is the deeds, not the name. To him that overcometh is the first of seven such promises in these two chapters, and this one, to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God, is cashed in full at 22:2's tree with its twelve manner of fruits.

Revelation 2:8-9

the first and the last: Smyrna hears from the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive, the title of 1:17-18 pressed directly against a church under threat of death, the Lord's own resurrection standing as its guarantee. I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, but thou art rich turns the world's ledger upside down, a poor church counted wealthy in Christ, and the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan names a local hostility from the Jewish community that handed Christians to Roman persecution, a charge against those particular accusers and never against ethnic Israel as a whole, whose future the book itself honours at 7:4 and 12:1.

Revelation 2:10-11

Alone among the seven, Smyrna receives no charge, only comfort: fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, and ye shall have tribulation ten days. The ten days is read two ways with holders, a short, limited season of testing in the plain sense, or ten literal periods of imperial persecution reaching to Diocletian in an older historicist scheme; either way the church's own martyr Polycarp, its bishop within a generation of this letter, died faithful unto death exactly as commanded. The overcomer's promise, shall not be hurt of the second death, answers 20:6 and 20:14 by name, the lake of fire holding no claim on those already secure in Christ.

Revelation 2:12-13

Pergamos hears from him which hath the sharp sword with two edges, the image of 1:16 now a word of judgment against a church that has grown too comfortable with what it should oppose. Even where thou dwellest, even where Satan's seat is names Pergamos honestly, the city's massive altar to Zeus and its imperial cult temple made it a center of pagan and Caesar-worship together, and against that backdrop the church still holdest fast my name and had not denied faith even when Antipas my faithful martyr was slain among you, the earliest named martyr in the book after the Lord himself.

Revelation 2:14-15

A few things stand against Pergamos: some there hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, the Numbers 22 to 25 episode where the prophet who could not curse Israel directly taught Balak to seduce it into idolatry and fornication instead, a strategy of compromise rather than open assault. So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans links the two errors as one family, a party inside the church urging accommodation to the surrounding idol-feasts and sexual license that Balaam once engineered from outside it.

Revelation 2:16-17

the sword of my mouth: Repent carries the same charge as Ephesus, with the same warning of a coming sword, and I will fight against them with the sword of my mouth turns the image of 1:16 from description into threat against the compromising party specifically. The overcomer receives three pictures at once: the hidden manna, the true bread from heaven kept above the golden pot's earthly manna of Exodus 16:33, a white stone whose ancient use as a verdict of acquittal or a token of friendship both stand behind the image with holders for each, and a new name written which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it, an intimacy with Christ no outsider can share.

Revelation 2:18-19

the Son of God: Thyatira hears the only letter to name the Son of God outright, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass, the vision of 1:14-15 turned toward a church whose works were growing, charity, service, faith, patience, and the last to be more than the first, a rare commendation of increase where every other letter either commends steadiness or reports decline. The eyes of flame see through Thyatira's rising activity to a compromise its growth was covering.

Revelation 2:20-23

that woman Jezebel: Thou sufferest that woman Jezebel names a local prophetess by the name of the Old Testament's most notorious promoter of idolatry, whether her own chosen title or a name the Lord assigns her for what she does, and her offense repeats Balaam's, teaching my servants to commit fornication and eat things sacrificed unto idols. Given space to repent, and she repented not brings a judgment as severe as the offense, cast into a bed of sickness, her partners into great tribulation, her children struck with death, so that all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts, the inward parts no human court can see, and will give unto every one of you according to your works, judgment matched exactly to the deed.

Revelation 2:24-25

A remnant in Thyatira has not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak, a phrase read as Jezebel's own claim, that deliberate sin explores Satan's depths in order to know grace's heights more fully, a counterfeit gospel of license the Lord answers with no other burden than to hold fast that which ye have already till I come. The faithful are not asked to fix the church's compromise, only to endure without joining it.

Revelation 2:26-29

The overcomer's promise to Thyatira reaches furthest of the four, power over the nations and to rule them with a rod of iron, Psalm 2:9's messianic scepter now shared with the church that overcomes, a promise the site's futurist reading cashes at 20:4's reign of the saints with Christ a thousand years. And I will give him the morning star adds a second gift, Christ himself under that title at 22:16, so that the overcomer's reward reaches all the way to deeper possession of the Lord who gives it. He that hath an ear closes all four letters alike, the Spirit's word to the churches never restricted to the one church first addressed.
