Philippians 1:1-2

Paul opens not as apostle but as servant, doulos, alongside Timothy, a title he shares to level himself with the church he addresses. The address to bishops and deacons, episkopoi and diakonoi, is the New Testament's plainest reference to established local church order, though the terms describe function rather than a developed hierarchy in this earliest instance. Grace and peace follow the greeting's fixed order, God's unearned favor preceding and producing the peace that answers it.

Philippians 1:3-4

Paul's thanksgiving rests on memory rather than present relief, for he prays from a Roman cell yet every remembrance of the Philippians turns to gratitude. The joy thread that gives the letter its name strikes here first, making request with joy, before the word rejoice ever appears outright. Prayer for these friends is constant, always in every prayer, and it is never separated from thanks.

Philippians 1:5

Koinonia in the gospel names the partnership thread that runs the whole letter, from the first day until now, a phrase pointing back to Lydia's household and the jailer's baptism in Acts 16. The fellowship is not vague affection but shared labor and shared giving, the ledger the letter will finally itemize at 4:15. Paul's gratitude for their partnership answers the furtherance pattern before it is even named, their giving having already furthered what his chains now also further.

Philippians 1:6

The day-of-Christ thread opens here and becomes the letter's horizon, struck again at 1:10 and 2:16. Being confident is Paul's own settled persuasion, not a wish, that the work God began he will perform, epitelesei, carry through to completion. The verse stands as a keep-hard ground for the believer's security, the same confidence the church has long leaned on for that comfort.

Philippians 1:7

Paul's meet, dikaion, right and fitting, love for the Philippians rests on evidence, I have you in my heart, since they have shared his bonds and his defence of the gospel alike. Partakers, sunkoinonous, repeats the fellowship word of verse 5, binding their partnership to his imprisonment itself. Both the defence, apologia, and confirmation, bebaiosis, are legal terms, the vocabulary of Paul's own approaching hearing.

Philippians 1:8

Splagchna, bowels, names the seat of deep affection in Hebrew idiom, and Paul reaches for an oath, God is my record, to certify a longing words alone could not prove. The affection is not merely his own but in the bowels of Jesus Christ, Paul's love for the church remade by and flowing through the Lord's own compassion. The phrase anticipates the mind of Christ that chapter 2 will unfold at length.

Philippians 1:9-11

Paul's prayer moves from affection to discernment, that love may abound yet more and more in knowledge, epignosis, and all judgment, aisthesis, a trained moral perception. The aim named in verse 10 is practical, that ye may approve things that are excellent, dokimazein, testing to find what truly matters, so as to be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ. The prayer ends where all Christian growth ends, filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God, grace producing fruit rather than fruit producing grace.

Philippians 1:12-14

The furtherance under pressure pattern opens here, the things which happened unto Paul, his arrest and captivity, having fallen out rather unto the furtherance, prokope, a pioneer's advance cut through obstacles, of the gospel. The palace, praetorion, names the emperor's guard, so that Paul's bonds in Christ are manifest through the very unit meant to secure Caesar, history that is keep-hard where the letter gives it. Many of the brethren take courage from his chains rather than fear from them, waxing confident to speak the word without fear, chains becoming a pulpit.

Philippians 1:15-17

Paul names two camps preaching the same Christ from opposite motives, some of envy and strife, eritheia, the same faction-word condemned at 2:3, hoping to add affliction to a prisoner's bonds, and some of good will and love, knowing Paul is set, keitai, appointed as by law, for the defence of the gospel. The rivalry is real and Paul does not soften it, yet he does not answer it with anger. The contrast prepares the surprising turn of verse 18, where the wrong motive does not void the right message.

Philippians 1:18

Christ is preached: What then, Paul's rhetorical question, answers itself, whether in pretence or in truth, Christ is preached, and in that fact alone, not in the preacher's motive, Paul rejoices. The joy thread doubles for the first time in the letter, I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice, present tense and future resolve joined in one breath. A capital hearing and rival preachers together cannot touch the one thing Paul has fixed his joy on, the gospel's advance rather than his own vindication.

Philippians 1:19-20

Paul expects the hearing's outcome, whatever it is, to turn to my salvation, soteria, likely his deliverance in the fullest sense rather than merely acquittal, secured through the Philippians' prayer and the supply, epichoregia, a chorus-sponsor's full provision, of the Spirit of Jesus Christ. His earnest expectation, apokaradokia, pictures a head craned forward watching for an outcome, and the hope is single, that Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death. Paul holds both outcomes of his trial open-handed, since either one serves the same end.

Philippians 1:21

to me to live is Christ: The letter's most compressed sentence states Paul's whole existence in six words, for to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. Living is Christ because Christ is the substance of every hour, and dying is gain, kerdos, a merchant's profit-word, because it exchanges the partial for the whole. The verse does not despise life, since Paul spends the next two verses weighing it seriously against death rather than treating it as worthless.

Philippians 1:22-23

Paul weighs continuing to live in the flesh as fruit of my labour worth having, yet confesses what I shall choose I wot not, a rare moment of the apostle caught between two good things. The strait betwixt two, sunechomai, means squeezed from both sides at once, torn between a desire to depart, analusai, the picture of a ship loosing its moorings, and to be with Christ, which is far better. The text gives the intermediate state directly here, not sleep or absence but presence, to depart and to be with Christ, and the church has read that presence as immediate and conscious.

Philippians 1:24-26

Paul judges his own continuance in the flesh more needful for you than his preferred gain, deciding the strait of verse 23 by love rather than desire. Having this confidence, he expects to abide and continue with the church for your furtherance and joy of faith, the furtherance word of verse 12 now turned toward their growth rather than the gospel's advance in general. His hoped return will make their rejoicing more abundant in Jesus Christ, joy again the measure of the outcome he seeks.

Philippians 1:27

Only, Paul's transition word, makes plain that everything before was preparation and this is the charge itself, let your conversation, politeuesthai, live as citizens, be as it becometh the gospel of Christ, the same civic word that returns at 3:20 for a colony that prized its citizenship. Whether Paul comes or stays absent, he wants one report, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind, the mind thread's first appeal, striving together, sunathlountes, an athletic image of a team contending as one body for the faith of the gospel. Unity here is not comfort but strategy, the church's stand against opposition depending on it.

Philippians 1:28-30

Fearlessness before adversaries becomes itself a sign, an evident token, endeixis, a courtroom exhibit, of the opponents' perdition and the church's salvation, both from God rather than from circumstance. Suffering is set beside believing as a matching gift, for unto you it is given not only to believe on him but also to suffer for his sake, one grace covering both. The same conflict, agon, the contest-word behind the English agony, that the Philippians once saw in Paul at his first arrival they now hear is still his, comrades bearing one fight.
