The verdict lands. 'Babylon hath been a golden cup in Jehovah's hand, that made all the earth drunken' (51:7), imagery Revelation takes up over the last Babylon. Physicians are called and the patient refuses: 'We would have healed Babylon, but she is not healed; forsake her.' The destroying mountain will be made a burnt mountain. Against her idols stands the God who made the earth by his power and established the world by his wisdom; the portion of Jacob is not like them. 'My people, go ye out of the midst of her.' Finally Seraiah carries the written scroll to Babylon, reads it, ties a stone to it, and throws it into the Euphrates: thus shall Babylon sink, and not rise again.
