Jeremiah 49:1-6

Ammon had seized Gadite territory east of the Jordan after Assyria carried that tribe into exile (2 Kings 15:29), and the opening question exposes the seizure as opportunism rather than any real claim, since Israel still had heirs to the land. Milcom, the Ammonite king-god also called Molech, is named as having no true title to what he holds, and the judgment falls on Rabbah, the capital city known today as Amman. Verse 6 closes the oracle with the same restoration formula given to Moab in 48:47, afterward I will bring again the captivity of the children of Ammon, mercy extended even inside a chapter built on judgment.

Jeremiah 49:7-11

Teman was proverbial for wisdom, the home region of Eliphaz in Job and the same reputation Obadiah 8 names when it asks whether the Lord will destroy the wise men out of Edom, so the taunt strikes at Edom's own claim to fame. The judgment described is total, Esau made bare, his hiding places uncovered, his seed and neighbors gone. Inside that same unrelieved sentence stands verse 11's plain exception, leave thy fatherless children, I will preserve them alive, and let thy widows trust in me, mercy toward the helpless left open even where the nation itself stands condemned.

Jeremiah 49:12-18

The cup of wrath poured out on nations who had done nothing to deserve it in 25:15-29 now overtakes guilty Edom by the same logic run from the lesser case to the greater, art thou he that shall altogether go unpunished. Bozrah is sworn to become a perpetual waste, and verse 18 compares the coming desolation to Sodom and Gomorrah in wording close enough to Obadiah's own oracle against Edom that the two prophets are read as carrying overlapping material, much as Jeremiah 48 and Isaiah 15 to 16 share language on Moab. No man shall abide there, the same sentence Jeremiah later gives Hazor and Babylon in this same block of oracles.

Jeremiah 49:19-22

The lion coming up from the thick growth along the Jordan is a figure Jeremiah reuses almost word for word at 50:44 against Babylon itself, the same sentence eventually turned on the empire carrying it out here. The string of rhetorical questions that follows, who is like me, who will appoint me the time, who is that shepherd that will stand before me, answers itself by leaving no answer available. Verse 22 closes the section with an eagle spreading its wings over Bozrah, terror pictured as sudden and airborne rather than a siege that can be watched approaching.

Jeremiah 49:23-27

Damascus's lament, how is the city of praise not left, the city of my joy, mourns one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the region, a capital Assyria had already broken once under Tiglath-pileser (2 Kings 16:9) and now faces Babylon's hand in turn. The city's fear is described in the same terms used elsewhere in these oracles for a woman in travail, panic that cannot be composed or reasoned with. The fire kindled against the palaces of Ben-hadad strikes a dynastic title borne by more than one Syrian king in Scripture (1 Kings 15:18, 2 Kings 13:3), the office rather than a single named ruler.

Jeremiah 49:28-33

Kedar traces to Ishmael's sons (Genesis 25:13), and this Hazor is unrelated to the walled Canaanite city Joshua destroyed, an unfortified region of Arab tent-encampments described by its very lack of defense, which have neither gates nor bars, which dwell alone. Their wealth is measured in tents, curtains, flocks and camels rather than fortification, goods easily carried off rather than a city that must be besieged. Verse 33 sentences Hazor to become a dwelling for dragons and a perpetual desolation, the identical formula the book later applies to Babylon's own ruin.

Jeremiah 49:34-39

The date fixes this oracle to Judah's last king, reaching all the way to Elam, a kingdom in the region later absorbed into Persia, far beyond the neighbors judged in the rest of the chapter. The scattering to the four winds, till there be no nation whither the outcasts of Elam shall not come, is total dispersion rather than a single conquest, yet verse 39 closes on the same restoration formula that ended the oracles against Moab and Ammon earlier in this block, in the latter days I will bring again the captivity of Elam. Three nation-oracles in a row end this way, a pattern worth naming outright as the chapter's own shape rather than three separate, isolated softenings.
