Hebrews 9:1-2

The first covenant carried its own ordinances of divine service and a worldly sanctuary, kosmikon, belonging to this world's order rather than a fault in itself. Verse 2 begins the furniture catalog inside the outer room, called simply the sanctuary or holy place: the candlestick, the table, and the shewbread, the priests' daily service described in Exodus 25 and 40. Edersheim reads each piece as functional and symbolic together, light, provision, and presence kept before God on Israel's behalf.

Hebrews 9:3-5

Behind the second veil stood the Holiest of all, entered by one man once a year, and its furniture is named in a single breath, the golden censer, the ark of the covenant overlaid with gold, and within it the golden pot of manna, Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant, with the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercyseat above. The writer stops himself at verse 5, of which we cannot now speak particularly, declining a detailed allegory the way the letter never lingers on furniture for its own sake. Each object still carries its own history, God's provision in the wilderness, Aaron's priesthood vindicated at Numbers 17, and the law itself, gathered under one mercy seat where blood alone was sprinkled.

Hebrews 9:6-7

Ordinary priests entered the first tabernacle continually, accomplishing the daily service, but into the second only the high priest went, and only once a year, not without blood, which he offered for himself and for the errors of the people. Leviticus 16 stands behind the verse, the Day of Atonement's single annual entry, Aaron and his successors carrying blood for their own sin as well as Israel's. The restriction is the very point the chapter builds toward, one man, one day, one year, against the single unrepeated entry Christ makes in the verses ahead.

Hebrews 9:8-10

The Holy Ghost himself is named as the arrangement's true author, signifying by the very architecture that the way into the holiest was not yet manifest while the first tabernacle still stood, the veil itself preaching a sermon Israel's priests walked past daily. Verse 9 calls the whole system a figure, parabole, for the time then present, gifts and sacrifices offered that could never perfect the worshipper's conscience. Verse 10 names its real character, meats, drinks, and divers washings, carnal ordinances imposed only until the time of reformation, diorthosis, a word for setting something crooked straight that Christ's coming supplies.

Hebrews 9:11-12

Christ comes as high priest of good things to come, entering by a greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, not of this building, language the letter uses elsewhere for heaven itself rather than any structure on earth. Verse 12 states the letter's once thread at one of its two summits: not by the blood of goats and calves but by his own blood he entered in once, ephapax, into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. The contrast with verses 6 and 7 is total, one entry against a yearly repetition, his own blood against an animal's, redemption obtained rather than covered again each year.

Hebrews 9:13-14

The argument runs from the lesser to the greater, qal wahomer, the rabbis' own form of reasoning turned to Christian use: if the blood of bulls and goats, and the ashes of the red heifer of Numbers 19, sanctify to the purifying of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ purge the conscience from dead works to serve the living God. The Levitical sacrifices reached only the flesh, ceremonial defilement; Christ's blood, offered through the eternal Spirit, reaches the conscience itself, the inward guilt no animal sacrifice ever touched. Without spot names his qualification as the offering, the same standard the Passover lamb and the daily sacrifices required and none of them could meet by nature.

Hebrews 9:15

For this cause, because his blood reaches the conscience, Christ is the mediator of the new testament, his death redeeming the transgressions committed under the first testament as well as inaugurating the second. The verse plays on a single Greek word, diatheke, that means both covenant and will, testament in the legal sense the next two verses argue from directly. Those who are called receive the promise of eternal inheritance, the same inheritance chapter 11 traces back through the patriarchs who died still looking for it.

Hebrews 9:16-17

The writer presses the legal sense of diatheke, testament as a will: where a testament stands there must of necessity be the death of the testator before it takes effect, for a testament is of force only after death, of no strength at all while the testator lives. The logic explains why the first covenant itself required blood at its founding, and why Christ's death was necessary for the new covenant's promises to take force rather than remain only announced. The wordplay does not abandon the covenant sense the chapter has used throughout; both meanings run together, and both require the death the chapter is arguing toward.

Hebrews 9:18-22

The first covenant's own founding at Sinai was not without blood, and Exodus 24 supplies the ceremony in full: Moses spoke every precept to the people, then took the blood of calves and goats with water, scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled the book itself, the people, the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry, saying, this is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you. Verse 22 draws the rule the whole Levitical system rests on, almost all things are purged with blood, and without shedding of blood is no remission, the near-absolute qualifying only the rare exceptions the law itself allows, such as the flour offering for the very poor at Leviticus 5:11. The pattern set at the first covenant's founding is the same pattern the chapter has argued runs through to Christ, blood required, blood given, blood alone bringing remission.

Hebrews 9:23

The logic of purification is carried one step further than a reader expects: even the copies, the patterns of things in the heavens, needed purifying with these earthly blood rites, but the heavenly things themselves needed better sacrifices than these, the letter's better thread reaching its highest object. The verse does not mean heaven itself carries defilement; it means the heavenly sanctuary's access for sinful worshippers required a sacrifice equal to what it truly is, Christ's own blood rather than an animal's. Edersheim's earthly-pattern reading and the letter's own logic here read together, the copy needing a copy's remedy and the reality needing the reality's own.

Hebrews 9:24-26

Christ has not entered a sanctuary made with hands, a mere figure of the true, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf, a permanent priestly appearing rather than a single ritual moment. Verse 25 rules out any thought of repetition, nor yet that he should offer himself often as the yearly high priest did with blood not his own; verse 26 answers what repetition would have required, he must then have suffered often since the foundation of the world. Instead he has appeared once, hapax, in the end of the world, sunteleia, to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself, the once thread's other summit alongside verse 12.

Hebrews 9:27-28

The analogy that closes the chapter is deliberately plain: as it is appointed unto men once to die, and after this the judgment, so Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many. The verse stands directly against any doctrine of repeated lives or reincarnation, one death, one judgment, the human pattern Christ's own single death and single offering answers rather than repeats. Unto them that look for him he shall appear the second time, not to deal with sin again, since that was finished at the first appearing, but without sin unto salvation, the same hope chapter 10 calls looking for that blessed hope.
