2 Kings 25:1-3

The siege's date is fixed to the day, matching Jer 52:4 almost word for word, and Ezek 24:1-2 has the prophet in Babylon commanded to write down this same day as a sign: son of man, write thee the name of this day, for the king of Babylon set himself against Jerusalem this same day. Two witnesses in two places mark one date. The famine that follows by the eleventh year's fourth month leaves no bread before the wall itself gives way.

2 Kings 25:4-5

The escape route by the gate between two walls near the king's garden is recorded in nearly the same words at Jer 39:4, the two accounts running side by side at the moment the wall finally fails. Zedekiah runs for the plain toward Jericho and the army scatters from him, the net of Ezek 12:13 closing exactly as spoken: I will bring him to Babylon, yet shall he not see it. The flight answers a specific prophecy before the capture even lands.

2 Kings 25:6-7

Riblah in the land of Hamath is Nebuchadnezzar's field headquarters, the same place that had already seen Pharaoh-nechoh's judgment on Jehoahaz at 23:33. The sons are slain before the king's own eyes and then those eyes are put out, an order that fulfils two prophecies rather than one: Jer 32:4 promised he would see the king of Babylon eye to eye, and Ezek 12:13 promised he would be carried to Babylon and not see it. Sight is given first and taken second, and both words stand.

2 Kings 25:8-10

The fifth month here becomes the fast Zech 7:3, 7:5 and 8:19 name centuries later, a mourning kept long after the reason for it had passed into history. Nebuzaradan burns the house of the LORD first in the sentence, then the king's house, then every great man's house, the destroyer's order following the builder's own priority of temple before palace. The walls come down last, a formal demolition carried out by the whole army rather than incidental ruin.

2 Kings 25:11-12

The bulk of the surviving population is carried off, and the poorest of the land are left as vinedressers and husbandmen, recorded almost identically at Jer 39:10. Leaving the poor to work the vineyards and fields is the ordinary policy of the conqueror rather than mercy for its own sake, keeping the ground producing under a governor rather than lying wholly to waste. The land is emptied of its leadership and kept, not abandoned.

2 Kings 25:13

The two pillars named Jachin and Boaz at their casting, he shall establish and in him is strength, are broken in pieces without their names spoken, the silence itself the point after 1 Ki 7:21 gave them names a worshipper read every time he entered. The molten sea Hiram cast at 1 Ki 7:23-26 goes the same way, and the brass of both is carried to Babylon. What stood roughly three hundred and seventy years from Solomon's dedication ends as scrap metal for a foreign treasury.

2 Kings 25:14-17

The smaller vessels, pots, shovels, snuffers, spoons and firepans, are taken by their metal, gold set apart from silver, while the bulk brass is simply broken. The pillar's height at eighteen cubits with a three cubit chapiter, the wreathen work and the pomegranates, repeats the casting description of 1 Ki 7:15-16 almost word for word, the inventory that opened the temple's furnishing closing it here in the same terms. The brass of all these vessels was without weight, an echo of the same phrase used of the sea's original casting.

2 Kings 25:18-21

Seraiah the chief priest is named as Jehozadak's father at 1 Chr 6:14-15, the priest whose son goes into captivity, and Ezra 7:1 traces Ezra's own priestly line back through this same Seraiah, so the generation that ends the kingdom is also the generation the return will be built from. Zephaniah the second priest is commonly read as the man Zedekiah twice sent to Jeremiah at Jer 21:1 and 37:3, a name that had already crossed the siege narrative before it reaches Riblah. All are slain there, and the chapter closes the formal kingdom in one sentence: so Judah was carried away out of their land.

2 Kings 25:22-24

Gedaliah's father Ahikam had kept Jeremiah from being put to death at Jer 26:24, and his grandfather Shaphan was the scribe who read the newly found book of the law before Josiah at 22:8-10, three generations serving the same prophetic word across the kingdom's last decades. Gedaliah's oath to the captains, fear not to be the servants of the Chaldees, dwell in the land, matches Jeremiah's own counsel at Jer 27 and 29 to submit and seek the city's peace rather than resist. A family with a record of protecting God's word governs the ruin it could not prevent.

2 Kings 25:25-26

Ishmael is himself of David's line, and the text records the murder without stating a motive beyond that, leaving the fuller account of Baalis king of Ammon's part in Jer 40:14 where it lies, in Jeremiah rather than here. Fear of Chaldean reprisal drives the remnant to Egypt, the exodus run in reverse, small and great together. Jer 43:6-7 records Jeremiah himself carried along against his own counsel, the prophet who had told them not to go forced into the very land he had warned against.

2 Kings 25:27

The thirty-seventh year and the twelfth month set the date against Jer 52:31, which gives the twenty-fifth day where this verse gives the twenty-seventh, a two-day variance the commentators name honestly rather than resolve. Evil-merodach, Nebuchadnezzar's son and successor, lifts up the head of Jehoiachin in the very year he begins to reign, the same idiom Pharaoh's butler hears at Gen 40:13, restoration and rank rather than a mere accounting. Thirty-seven years is most of a man's working life spent in a Babylonian prison before this word comes.

2 Kings 25:28-30

The lamp promised for David's sake at 1 Ki 11:36, 15:4 and 2 Ki 8:19 narrows across two books to one living man, and here it is kept, not as a throne recovered in Jerusalem but as a captive's seat raised above the other kings at a foreign table. Matt 1:11-12 carries Jechonias by this same name through this exact door into the genealogy of Christ. The prison garments are changed and the phrase all the days of his life is set down twice, once for the bread and once for the allowance, as if written twice to stand against reversal, and the scroll of Kings ends here, on a kept word in a strange land.
