See here in wrath God remembered mercy, and yet admitted some of them upon a further trial of their obedience.

on Jeremiah 40:11-12
Jews who fled to “Moab, Ammon, Edom, and all the other lands” return to Gedaliah at Mizpah when they hear a remnant has been left. They gather “an abundance of wine grapes and summer fruit.” The harvest is brief, since the next verses carry the threat that ends it.
