And from this plentiful provision here made for the priests the apostle infers that it is the duty of Christian churches to maintain their ministers; those that served at the altar lived upon the altar. So those that preach the gospel should live upon the gospel, and live comfortably, 1 Cor. ix.

on Numbers 18:8-14
The portions are sorted by two rules and the text marks the difference without explaining it. The most holy things of verses 9 and 10 are eaten by the males of the priestly families inside the sanctuary, while the heave offerings, the wave offerings and the firstfruits of verses 11 to 13 are eaten by every clean person in the priest's house, daughters included. Albert Barnes reads the phrase in the most holy place at verse 10 as among the most holy things, which turns the sentence from a place into a class. Paul cites this arrangement by name at 1 Corinthians 9:13, that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple.

Even in keeping God's commandments there is great reward. The present pleasures of religion are part of its pay. That they had not only a good table kept for them, but money likewise in their pockets for the redemption of the first-born, and those firstlings of cattle which might not be offered in sacrifice.
It was not for the sake of their personal merits above other Israelites that they had these tributes paid to them, be it known unto them; but purely for the sake of the office to which they were anointed. Thus all the comforts that are given to the Lord's people are given them by reason of the anointing which they have received.
