But since by God's command they were scattered over the whole land, and did not cease to be ministers of the tabernacle on account of the distance of their residence, it was justly permitted that, wherever they might be, they should eat of the meat appointed them by God.

The Levites give a tithe of the tithe, reckoned to them as grain from the threshing floor or juice from the winepress. So men with no fields are credited with a harvest.

The remainder of the tithe is common food for the Levite's family, while the most holy portions of verse 10 stayed inside the sanctuary. John Calvin ties the freedom to where the Levites lived, scattered by God's command across the whole land. Joshua 21 names their towns among the tribes.
