on Joshua 1:12-15
Joshua holds the two and a half tribes to the terms of Numbers 32:20-22. They cross armed ahead of their brothers and go home only when the land is subdued. Their families stay east of the river, so these men fight for ground they will never live on.

Henry reads the condition as their one way clear of the sin of settling east of the Jordan, which Moses warned would find them out. They had agreed to it themselves at Numbers 32:25. Joshua keeps his side at 22:4, sending them home once the land has rest.

It was the only expedient they had to save themselves from the guilt of a great sin in settling on that side Jordan, a sin which would one time or other find them out, Num. xxxii.
